Hey everyone new guy here with a few questions. Since i'm based out of Long Island and it is notorious for not having any good used trucks ever, i'm going out of state. The main questions is, should i buy an older truck with some decent miles, say around 550-600K on it for a good price and dump 20-25 into it on some serious rebuilding, or should i really bite the bullet and dump my life and soul into a new truck on a gamble that if it doesn't work at least i can sell it back for a 30% loss. I still have my day job (family construction co), this is a second company i'm looking to start with the wife. Day cab, mostly local runs hauling some equipment with a lowboy out of PA and northeast.
We currently have an international 5900I with a tuned up 475 cummins and an 18speed for the family business. Motor seems strong no issues with 330K on the clock. I appreciate all the hekp.

I wise man on here once told me,
"I'd rather buy a used truck and a rebuilt engine with 500k miles, than to buy a newer trick with a warranty"
I don't know man. Is it your first truck? How much do you have saved up? What will you be doing? OTR? Local? Where will you be going? Mountains, flat lands? Some of the more experienced guys will be on here at some point. Just answer these questions and see what they say. Also search a few threads on this, it's been discussed numerous times. -
I will never buy a new truck again. Let someone else dish out the big bucks first!
DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
I have enough set aside for this business to get roughly a new truck and 55 ton lowboy. So if i can dump 1/3 of that into the truck i'll have plenty for reserves and a just in case fund. To start it will be a day cab and mostly local stuff with maybe a few southern runs to move equipment. It is personally my first truck yes. Yeah i did some searching i was just seeing if anyone had real world experience doing a complete overhaul of a truck. Dumping 20-25 grand into a truck should do a real nice rebuild on most of the major components. Plus all this emissions crap irritates me so it would definitely be pre-emissions. Just putting it out there. Thanks for the responses

If you plan on running a 55T trailer then I am guessing you are going with a 4 tractor???
There is a member on here selling the exact setup you are looking for actually in the classifieds section.....

I saw that and it is definitley nice i've considered it but i dont need the sleeper and with the crappy tight new york roads i need all the inches i can squeeze.
-
Well if you are going to pass up a deal like that because of a sleeper then idk what to tell you. But just so you know, even a daycab truck is going to have the same wheelbase to do heavy hauling. The sleeper mean you will be able DO those southern trips you were speaking of. Most hotels won't allow you to park at them, let alone get the truck into and back out of the lot.
Just saying, it's what u need and being your 1st truck I would rather spend $65k on the entire combo than $225k on some brand new stuff. -
Hmm i never thought of it that way i wasn't planning on running south for a while i have an account lined up locally hauling some equipment so i didn't even think about getting a sleeper at all. The trailer isn't an issue i have a great trailer lined up. I wasnt starting with a lowboy it was a 40 ton double drop with a fantastic 18" deck height and 29' well. I have a lowboy at the family business i can steal if i have to. I was just stating what i had to put aside, which wasn't 225 haha.
Edit-I also don't like buying equipment from someone who comes on a forum, lists his first post as a sale and disappears. Just a personal preference. -
Understood.
I would go with a used truck then. If you are planning on doing a rebuild it, why not try to find one with higher miles or even a blown motor. I know where I can get a few pre-emissions trucks with bad engines for $5k. Spend $15,000 on a engine/trans rebuild, another $2k to have the front end rebuilt, add another $4k for tires and brakes then maybe have the interior redone. For $30k you would basically have a brand new "used" truck. -
Good call, thats exactly what i was looking for a clean truck that needs a rebuild.
