The companies are probably just adhering to the minimun requirements; and minimun equates to cheapest -- and cost efficiency is every companies goal.
Also, like posted above; many widely abused synthetic drugs also land on the 5 panel test from their base compounds (oxycontin/opiate, adderall/amphetamine, etc.).
Hallucinogens won't show up though, which is weird - LSD, psilocybin -- the metabolites can be tested, but they apparently don't on the standard test.
Gryphon knows a lot about testing policies/procedures. Run it by them.
DOT Drug Testing.... Baffling

Actually if a person behind the wheel of an 80,000 pound vehicle is using/abusing substances that impair judgment and affect their ability to drive that large vehicle, I contend they ARE a hazard.

Here is my pic from the other night -- no condition for driving.

if using any mind altering drugs or meds, this is the last business one should pursue.

I think that would go with out saying............

I guess maybe I wasn't clear on your post...I thought you were saying we shouldn't worry about drug testing for truckers because they weren't the real hazard, but 4 wheelers were.
I agree that there are a lot of idiots out there driving around in cars, but I don't think that in any way alleviates responsibility from truckers and companies to do their best due diligence to ensure safe (and drug free) drivers are behind the wheel of commercial vehicles. -
sorry for not making myself more clear, i will try to make it crystal. i think DOT has enough measures currently in place to ensure the general public that truckers are screened with a fine tooth comb to prohibit new and current drivers to be on americas highways in fact even when not behind the wheel. using mind altering substances - zero tolerance.
i just don't know exactly how many more regulations you want?Medic10 Thanks this. -
49 CFR Part 40 says it different.
40.13 describes how DOT tests take priority and must be performed and completed before any non-DOT test is begun...and you cannot use the urine collected for the DOT test for an additional non-DOT test.
Clearly you CAN perform additional testing but after and separate from the DOT test.
I know in Ohio the BWC allows a 'Drug Free Workplace' company a discount on workers comp. That mandates non-DOT testing for every employee and mandates non-DOT testing for any on the job injury.
These places need to do the DOT testing first. They can continue with an additional non-DOT test if they wish.deviltalk Thanks this. -
OK, got ya. 5 panel vs something else. No, there doesn't need to be more governmental regulation. I went to bed late and was up early running fire calls (got a bunch of snow yesterday afternoon/night). My brain isn't currently firing on all cylinders, so just disregard any posts from me today that are a little off.

preform extra on top of DOT. Like a hair test!!!!
