I work for UPS feeders up North and there are 2 thing I have to say, 1st, great, thx for your experience...
2nd, some people (UPS sups) are now saying you should never hit the dolly with your front trailer and then move ahead... Some people has ruptured the air lines on the dolly or on the rear of the front trailer for using the "hit" as a reference... My trick is, I'll rather be 10 feet off, than hitting the dolly with my front trailer, at least backing a trailer with a dolly attached to it is not that hard!
So you want to pull doubles/triples...

The dollies you guys use in feeders has that airline that runs over the top of the dolly, I bet thats the one that has been ruptured. We dont have that air line there. Bumping the dolly the way you are describing (with our equipment) doesnt damage anything. Its the way most guys do it. Back up til you feel it bump, and then pull up about 2 feet.

Thank you for reminding why I am happy with my less pay, dry van, just open the doors, job. I'm even getting to hate drop and hooks.

Great Post Harvey Wallbanger. Thats what this forum is all about. The load of info. Its been a real long time since I hooked up a set of doubles. Now once someone has them hooked up, and WINTER time, Thats the hard part. Not rolling them over.

Pulling a van is so boring. Ill pull them wiggle wagons as long as possible

If it still won't roll, use the petcock on the air tank to drain the last bit of air out and they'll usually release. The parking brake uses the air in the dollies' tank to apply the brakes (kinda like the "old school" trailer parking brakes). Don't put the dolly on a slope and leave it for the weekend and don't set the brake in the winter.
