I've been quoted $4000 for a complete paint job on my Pete 379. The guy doesn't have an actual paint booth, so I'm a bit worried that the work won't be as good as a professionally done in-booth paint job.

On the other hand, a friend who's used this guy for several trucks in his fleet swears by him, and the trucks do look good.

What do you guys think? Is it worth a shot, or is it "too good to be true"?

I've both done and had some paint jobs done that were not in a professional booth and they turned out good. Price-wise you'd probably struggle to beat that if you're getting a quality job done. Is he using two-stage paint? Worst case scenario if he messed up on the clear he could sand it down and rework it or buff it out, though it sounds like he knows what he's doing.

I definitely won't be able to beat the price. I think I will give it a shot.

As I said before, worst case scenario it goes to a skilled buffer, you'd still come out ahead price-wise.

I used the open shop paint method for years and vary rarely had any problems. Keep the shop clean and prep the floor before painting, a vent fan to pull over spray out of shop. The two things I avoided was painting during pollen season (it floats in air and appears as dirt in paint) and painting during rain or high humidity, can cause blushing in paint if it dries while holding moisture. I wouldn't balk at the deal if the guy does this with success. Paint booths really aren't a necessity if you take the proper steps without one.

We just had a 379 Pete that got wrecked we replaced half the cab and hood it cost us roughly 3500 so is say 4000 is in the ball park especially if you have a sleeper I wouldent worry about not having a booth it will come out good its all in the prep and painter

I've done alot of body work and never used a booth. 90% of painting is prep. If he does a good job of sanding, smoothing, masking, and priming...then as already said...watches the weather like a hawk....and keeps a clean shop you will be fine. As you said you have already seen his work. I would make this suggestion though. I'm not familiar with Petes...I"ve done Kenworth and Western Stars....and LOTS of fiberglass boat work. I would suggest Imron if you can afford it. It does cost more...but if your Pete has Fiberglass fenders...and even if it doesn't...you'll get a way tougher finish that will withstand alot more road debries and last longer. Imron is a very tough paint but at the same time can flex. If you ever paint fiberglass Imron will do the best hands down. The main thing is getting the hardener right and not waiting to long to spray after mixing and waiting proper time between coats. I do not know how your weather is now...but without a booth or heated shop I would wait until it did not drop below 60 at night. Just my .02 cents.

What are your color plans?? Changing, staying the same, or what? I love talking about body work...lol.

Get it wrapped for $2000.00, keep $2000.00 for a rainy day

The good thing about the 379 is that it's one of the last trucks on the market (if not THE last) that was still made of metal. Metal cab, metal fenders, metal hood. There is no fiberglass on it that I'm aware of, although I'm sure someone will manage to point out something I'm not aware of!

The main reason I'm painting it is because of sun fade/UV damage to the paint, particularly on top of the hood, cab and sleeper (and yes, I do have a sleeper -- it's the truck pictured in my signature.)

Right now, it's a darker red, almost a candy apple red. I've thought about doing some crazy paint job with a green backdrop and a jungle mural on top. Something artistic and different.

But I don't think I'm going to do that this time around. Instead, I'd like to make it a brighter red. Something akin' to what Peterbilt likes to use in their advertising. The frame is black and will stay that way. The engine is a Caterpillar, and could probably use some touchups here and there to restore that bright Caterpillar yellow, but that isn't included in the quote I got.

The only spot where I have actual blistering in the paint right now is around the mirror mounts on the doors. That seems to be a problem with pretty much every 379 I've seen, and I think it has something to do with two incompatible metals causing corrosion. Would love to find a solution to THAT problem before I paint it.

And I'm open to other ideas for paint as well. :)

Red is the worst color about sun fade and if your in tx thats a big concern.

I would think about a different color myself. Most red trucks in tx look.orange after a few years.

Definatly use imron, its the only paint for a truck in my opinion.

If it turns out good let me know where he is intx as i may need a paint job fairly soon.
