Did you get to talk to the couple about whether or not they were liking their experience so far? We would like to go with Covenant, but we've just heard so much bad about them. We know everybody's experience is different, but we definitely don't want to put ourselves in harm's way just because we can stay together through training, we aren't THAT desperate. It does sound like they had a decent trainer if he was having them do alot of practicing to help get in their 150 hours.
Thanks so much for the response and good luck to you two as well! :biggrin_25519:

here is the answer and 777 is on the mark. i can only back him up and say .you will split up and gender matching is the best you will do. if the trainer is an ### request a different. but just because the trainer is asking you to do things doe not mean they are be ing lazy or useing you as a gofer. you learn by doing. remember everything is half. the windshield the cleaning the fueling on and on. much like the sarge is trying to train you and give you the basics so you do not get killed. embrace the job, pay your dues. my company would love to hire a team with 5 years verifiable exp. and you both wil make 75-80 k each per year. its hard but if you give up you will roam from one job to another and stay in that revolving door of job hopping and never haveing a long term employer to get you out of it. its easy to get mad and find another job, but thats all you wioll be doing and starting over again, and again. i am telling you the truth

Not sure if they still allow it, but Central Refrigerated is who my husband and I drive for. We trained separately, but in my husband's class there was a married couple that went through together... Including the on the road training. Just a thought...

Gearjammers, we have about 15-20 trainers that we use for couples training at Covenant. Several of those trainers are on our Executive Council and have over a decade of experience at our company. Feel free to go to the Covenant page on here and read the recent posts. Most of our poorer comments are quite old as we continue to impact a new open door culture at Covenant.

My husband and I are in a similar situation. In a few weeks we will be signing up for trucking school and have the same concerns about training/ truck companies. We also have 4 dogs and I don't have anyone to sit for us so if we were able to train together then great we could board them with the vet, but if we don't train together then we're concerned whether we'll be able to stagger our training time so that way one of us is home with them at some time or one of us has hit the road solo and can take them with them until the other one of us finishes and joins up. We really don't know what to think about anything and we're just trying to wait and see and take it as it comes. Since you guys are a little bit more advanced in the plan than we are, would you mind sharing everything you learn with us? We would appreciate the help. Also, if you do get to train together could you please tell us who you chose because we would prefer to train together as well. Thanks and TTYL!

It is legal to be in the top bunk OTR as long as you have propper restraints (International Prostar has them, Cascadia does not). I did the 3 in a truck thing with Covenant's training and it wasnt that bad even with 3 complete strangers. I certainly wouldnt volunteer to do it again, but 35 days isnt too bad.

as opposed to the katlaw in austell, there is northwest ga technical in lafayette,ga that is a state run school and probably less expensive and you should be assured that you will receive the hope scholarship making things that much less expensive.white,ga to lafayette about the same as driving to austell i am thinking if not less mileage wise.

i'm just suggesting that you check other schools out before settling on katlaw if you have not already done so.I do power only runs out of rock spring,ga from time to time and go by that truck driving school regularly. best of luck and congratulations on having a marriage that warrants driving truck together.

To my knowledgs there is no "LAW" about being in the top bunk. I think it has more to do with safety guidelines that each company adopts. Restraints do help secure the person in the bunk while the vehicle is moving but many times the person in the bunk will decide to get up and move to the front of the truck while the truck is in motion. Climbing down from the top bunk is tough enough while the truck is stationary let alone attempting to do it while it is moving.

By the way a little advice for new team operations. When sleeping in the bunk of a moving truck always use the bottom bunk with restraints in place and make sure you always put your head behind the drivers side seat. The reason for this is very simple; In the event of an accident a driver will normally attempt to protect his/her side of the truck (self preservation kicks in). You will have a greater chance of surviving an accident if you have your head behind the driver.
