My insurance carrier also asks for years of experience but they don't ask when that experience was. If the original poster maintained his CDL in good standing the whole time he was off the road, there is a chance that some small carrier would take a chance on him.
An owner operator whom is leased to a carrier is highly unlikely to be able to hire this guy. That is simply due to the fact that the hiring decisions are made by whomever's authority is being used, in most, if not all cases.Crusty Thanks this. -
Yeah, you can get insured. Be a huge risk for any carrier that doesn't have a training program.

I was out for 6 years serving in the army but maintained my class a. When I went back to driving it seemed like no one would hire me without experience but a cdl mill took me on I didn't have to take any of the written test just the road test and had to go out with a trainer then after a while I moved on and eventually we bought our own truck and will be hitting the road in april.

I too was off the road for about 10 years, other than driving dumps and also armored trucks for Loomis-Fargo. Their requirement was CDL-B, but I had retained my class A. When i wanted to get back into class 8 trucks, everyone wanted at least one year experience within the previous 3 years. An O/O I knew had a coupled trucks leased to Old Dominion. He wanted to hire me, but OD said I would have to go to a CDL school, which was not an option for me at that time. Two years later this same O/O had gotten his authority and contacted me about working for him. His insurance never balked, and I was back in the saddle again. But my my, how things had changed since I had last ran OTR. All the changes to HOS and other DOT regs. I would listen to other drivers at loading docks talk about these things, then i would look them up online and study them to become familiar with them.
Well, after a year and a bit, the repo man cometh, and I was without a job. No openings at the armored car companies. I didn't want to work for a mega carrier. So I cashed in my 401K, bought a 97 Volvo and a 96 Stoughton trailer, got my authority and made me a job. March 28 will make three years for me as and O/O, and I'm still learning.Crusty, RedForeman and jjranch Thank this. -
Well we will lease on a to a carrier like landstar for a few years until we can buy a trailer of our own then we will get our authority and go out on our own. Had a set back due to an injury so there went the money. One way or another we will make it work.
