    Hi everyone,
My bf is a trucker and I keep his books for him. I am more than halfway through my Bachelor's degree and was wondering if any owner-operators would use my idea. I was thinking of starting a business where o/o's could send their paperwork and I could make sure everything is correct for them and even prepare an end of year statement for filing taxes. I do this for him all year, every year and he has never been audited in our 10 years together. I keep track of his fuel by state, fuel tax (inc. ad valorem and mileage in the necessary states), make sure his pay matches what was on the load, keep track of fuel surcharge, miles driven, days home, tolls, repairs, maintenance, and so on.

So would anyone be interested in this type of thing? Thanks for reading and responding if possible.

Check out ATBS. That's your competition for your service.
They charge $16/week--for everything you've offered.

Could you compete and make money, and be happy.

Imagine 20 calls per person:biggrin_25522:...about every subject times the number of clients you have. :biggrin_2554:

I prefer Turbo tax for $100

Thanks Sleepingbear for the feedback. I had hear of ATBS before but never really looked into them but I will do that. Do you know if ATBS provides personal service (like a person on the phone)? Just curious is all. Thanks again!

    In theory, yes.

Most of the big national fleets use ATBS. They generally have an in-house staff member for LP o/o service calls. If that does'nt solve the problem, you can call atbs, where your likely to get a 'responder'. Certainly not personalized.

ATBS wins because they get a plethora of new entrant lp's every month, from so many fleets. Once the driver realizes:biggrin_2558: they can do all this themselves, they do.

Very true about doing it themselves. He doesn't have the time though since he runs pretty hard. Was only home 47 days last year, but hey they say absence makes the heart grow fonder! I thank you and appreciate your time and feedback, it is helping me tremendously!

How you can set yourself apart is by looking at the drivers operation and exploring options to increase revenue, decrease expenses or both. Your BF could be your first test subject. Is he running that hard becuase he needs to (of feels he needs to) or becuase that he the life he likes? If it is the first then you need to figure out how he can reduce the number of miles, increase hometime (if that is what you want) and increase what he makes.

Many drivers don't know anything other than "more mile = more money" (they are working hard but not smart). It is a hard thing to change. But plenty of O/O's driving less than 100K a year making better than 75K a year.

    Good luck

    You're on the right track.

I have always paid to have that done, I procrastinate very badly if it's left to me. I HATE the paperwork and accounting.

    Thanks everyone I appreciate it!

Big Bad Bill ~ That is where I am not sure if I am on the right track of setting myself apart. And my old man works that hard for all of his toys, one he just recently bought. He has some cosmetic and mechanical things that need to be done on this old car he just bought. Plus up until my mom died a year ago, she would watch our son and I would go out with him "on vacation" for the summers.

Paul and Pilottravel ~ Thanks. He is a procrastinator also, needless to say when I met him 10 years ago, I had a huge mountain of paperwork in front of me in just one heap. My issue is we do know some other owner operators but they are scattered all over the country and they themselves hate doing their paperwork. I am trying to figure out how to coordinate everything so it is easy on the guys who are out there driving.

Oh one more thing, once I got everything under control and ran the numbers, I upped and moved us to a different part of the state. We had been living way up north here in Michigan and he was spending $1000/month to come home. Now we live in a border town just north of Detroit and the savings has been huge! Bad part was I made him sign papers on a house without him even seeing it until the day we moved in! HA
