Sparkn- you use same fuel network as company and its taken out of your settlement. You can go out of network but must use your cash to do so. I highly recommend staying in network though as you get a pretty good discount off pump price.
As far as all road and fuel taxes Maverick pays it then deducts from your settlement. Income taxes is on your end and upto you to save, however you can set up a voluntary escrow and tell them how much to hold out.
There is NO INSURANCE BENEFITSUNLESS YOU PROVUDE THEM FOR YOURSELF at this time. They do offer what I call "preinsurance" which is like Aflack only a different company.
There are two mandatory escrows. The first is a security escrow of $2000 taken out at 5% of linehaul every week til it meets the $2000. The second is the maintenance escrow which comes out everyweek at 12% of linehaul till you hit $12k but unless you are blessed with a year of zero maintenance that mark will never be reached. I carry an average balance of between 7500-9500. Now on the new Cascadias the maintenance amount may be different but I cant imagine so since they are almost new with lots of warranty left.
I generally have no issues using my mauntenance escrow.
You can "walk away" at anytime for any reason and your escrow will be returned in 45 days or less per your contract minus any maintenance issues you didnt fix before bringing the truck back. There are minimum brake and tire requirements that must be met to return the truck. 50% tread and brake shoe remaining. They will give you a truck that exceeds that so they expect at least that on return.
you can use a load board IF Maverick has no freight in yout area or very cheap freight and you stumble upon a load that pays better than any they have. They still get their percentage if you do that though. Ive heard on occasion where IC's have gotten some decent loads from broker contacts they had that Maverick gladly allowed so it never hurts to look.
As far as turning down loads I do it as little as possible but recently turned one down and the csr pushed me out til 8am the next morning so that everyone who unloaded before then was ahead of me on the load board. That is the first time I had issues with that CSR and that problem was resolved by my FM because the CSR was in the wrong.

The fixed expenses on the Cascadias they are leasing now will be somewhere in the $600/wk area. That includes truck payment, insurances, permits etc. All fixed expenses. Then figure an average of. 13cpn maintenance escrow plus fuel costs.
Im averaging 1.60cpm to the truck for all miles right now. Freight is good and rates are getting better so its a good time to jump in.

Hmm, it all sounds interesting. Biggest hangup for me would be health insurance. I have found insurance through BCBS of Illinois for just under $400/month but without group policy protection, I feel like it's open season and I'm the duck, not to mention that cost is strictly major medical benefits and doesn't include anything routine or non-life threatening ER visits (like fractures, wound closing, etc.), or even quality of life (morphine for terminal illness, reconstruction, dialysis favored over a new kidney, etc.).

Well after a breakdown delay first thing this week I still managed to get in 2600mi and gross $3700. Normally my gross is more on that many miles but I took a hit having to swap my first load when I was brokedown. Still not bad though. Now loading in Bedford Hts,Oh goin to Tulsa for monday payin over $1600 to the truck!

Dan don't get me wrong, but the way I read it you are sending over $12,000 a year in maintenance costs. Did I read that wrong or did you just have some major issues.

I will agree rates are coming up slowly but surely. This week Gary to Greenberg Indiana 140 a 100 on a 210 mile run. Then picked up in Gary going to Cleveland 135 a 100 that rate sucks going to Cleveland out of Gary the rate always did.

I hope the gremlins take a break and everything goes smoothly for you for a while. Have a great weekend, drive safe and enjoy the ride.

I just found out that Ohio passed a law two years ago that allows companies to offer health insurance to their 1099 drivers at the group rates. Wish Arkansas did that.
