If you live in NC, Jan 30th a new law goes into effect that you will have to provide proof of your medical card.

I still hold a CDL Class A, but do not currently drive. I called them and they said on Jan 30th a Form will be made available - "Self-certification of exemption". Fill out and mail to the address on the letter you should have received.

I do not know the time limit on either submitting a copy of your medical card or Self-certification of exemption, but if they do not receive either they will downgrade your license to non-commercial or cancel your driving privileges.

Other states may have the same.

    Just a FYI.

Yes this is suppose to go into effect in all States by the year 2014 from what I understand. If you have a Class A you will need a special seal from your DOT physical that you must bring to the registry of motor vehicles that they then will put into the system when your DOT card expires. This is already in effect in a few states.

Jimmiesgirl, you ever listen to that song about you, titled "Jimmies girl" by Johnny Tillotson from about 1960 ? Just checked it on Y-tube (Jimmy's girl)

Well the Hudson DMV office told my Brother and another driver to disregard the letter stating January 30. That the letter was sent out to early and we will be getting another letter.

There will be a second letter here in Maine asking all CDL holders to come to their (DMV) offices to state what type of truck you drive / rated for, and to provide a current medical card. Part of some FMCSA mandate. Nothing new, just move along.

I just talked to them and they verifed the Jan 30th date. I called them direct off the number on the letter.

Ohio sent out similar letters. If you want to change or update your CDL (address, endorsements, renew, etc), you'd need a copy of your current medical card to make those changes. At the absolute latest, January 2014, you're required to present your medical card (which you would've needed to have updated by then as well, since that's 2 years from now).

My license renews in mid 2014, so I'll probably go and take it in sometime after I get my next medical next spring. Just making it easier for DOT to check whether your medical is legit on a roadside check. Because now, if you don't have a medical sent in to the state after 2014, they'll suspend your license.

Which, also, if one form is misfiled, etc, we're liable to get a false suspension listed. My friend had that happen when he went to renew his license. He paid with a money order and had the receipt AND the new license. The PA DMV (or whatever) claimed he never paid to renew his license and suspended it. A few months later he pulled over at an accident and was giving his info to the officer for what he witnessed. Shortly thereafter, the officer called him when he was doing some paperwork or something with the accident/incident to let him know that his license was listed as suspended. Called the DMV, and was told it was suspended for non-payment. Had to get routed home, went before a judge. Showed him his new license and the money order receipt and the suspension was lifted. All because of a paperwork glitch. Which we will see more of once this law goes full force in 2014.

I also called the number on the letter. I was asssured the Jan 30th date is correct. I made a copy of my physical and license and faxed them to the fax number on the same letter. This is what the lady told me to do if I didn't want to go to the DMV.

I am not currently driving either, but I went this past summer and got a new physical anyway.
