Canadian companies taking new drivers

Day and Ross, Sunbury and Midland have been doing so for years. Hell, they got drivers that don't even speak/write/read english.

 

Hell, some of them can't even drive period.

 

Do you feel comfortable with no trainers? i jumped right into it, currently running for a company that doesn't typically hire rookies. However if you do not have any sort of background in anything related to driving a big rig down the road i would advise against this as your career and your own saftey rely on you being given the chance to succeed.

Now, companies to avoid unless you have no other option.... Schneider, SGT, CAT, Day&Ross, QuickX TransX, kindersley, And any "equal opportunity employer" thats code word for "we hire immigrant pakis who cant drive cuz they work for less." And before anyone gets on their high horse on that comment go drive the 17 thru nothern ontario or the BC mountain all winter and you tell me what kind if headwear you see on the drivers of the countless wrecked trucks.... /endrant.


essentially what you need to do is look for companies that DONT advertise. Small companies 80 tractors or maybee only 5, ones that treat you like a name not a number, ones that are driver focused, offering everything you could want at their terminals. those are the places you want to work at or at least aim for.

That being said if you dont feel comfortable getting a truck, trailer, and keys right out of school a choice like that is not the best of idea's, and IF heaven forbid you must choose a "starter company" from what i hear, Bison and Kriska are some of the lesser evils out there. Your school could also be a great resource, i used KRTS out of caledonia ON, and it was worth every penny, the owner personally sent an email off and opened a door at an absolutely amazing company after i made the bumbling move of falling for a bottom feeder companies lying recruiters pitch.

The thing I hope you really give good thought, is that you CANT do too much research or look at too many companies, the more work you put into your search the happier you will be with your chosen results

 

well with sgt, for starters 28 cents a mile.... you will make more money in training collecting your 100 bucks a day than on the road, half of their workforce is pullstarts. All these big starter companies will treat you like a number not a name and use for everything they can. SGT and the likes are bottom feeders, picking up rookies who cant get on anywhere else or people with such bad records they cant get in anywhere else, or pakis willing to work for almost free. I would strongly suggest bison or kriska is a starter company is the way you want to go.

If you spend a little bit of time on these forums looking at posts where rookies ask what company they should go with, you will see time and time again, "find the small companies, the ones that dont advertise," you might not have training options, but they are well worth it if you feel you can make that leap.

If not research the companies ur thinking of just to get ur 1 year very very very carefully, dont believe anything they tell you and make sure you can talk to at least two or more of their current drivers and ask them questions.

just go to the report a bad company here and look for posts on swift, england, schnieder, etc and all the big american starter companies, read what ppl are saying, its no different north of the border
