HI, I am currently running reefers and vans with own authority, but have considered turning to stepdeck, flatbed freight. Just wondering if anyone has made that switch and how the money compares. I have a few customers with flat freight in missouri but it doesnt seam to pay any better than my van freight. I have experience with flat about 6 years ago but it was as a company driver. Your comments are welcome

Stepdeck rate are generally higher than flat rates because the equipment is more specialized. Ultimately, it comes down to flexibility. Spec your step right, and you can haul most flat loads on your step. Spec a light combo or all aluminum step, probably 50ft, and this should allow you to take advantage of most acceptable load opportunities.

This is my opinion, I know others will disagree, and it is ultimately dependent on your freight that you said you had. This may not be the best option for my operation or yours all the time, but in general a setup like this should maximize your opportunities.

I've never found Misery to be a hotbed of flatbed freight in the first place, so the rates could be comparable with your other trailer. I switched from running dry and reefer and have done better, but it depends on where you want to run, and the contacts you create. It also depends on the economy to a much greater extent. Everyone has to eat, but not everyone has to buy a new car, house, tractor, etc.

Thanks for the info, just glancing at rates it doesnt seam to be any better than reefer, but it would be nice for some of our own product we haul. I don't drive that much anymore and reefer trailer seams to depreciate so fast it isnt funny.

Well that is one nice thing about platform trailers, once they hit half of new pricing, they stay there for years. Especially when metal commodities are rising. You'll never find an old aluminum flatbed or step deck for under $8,000 as they get recycled.

Travelinman and The Challenger Thank this.
