Anyone have info on the CAT exhaust sleeve failures? are they failing at the weld? what seems to be the cause for these failures, is it mainly due to the extreme exhaust temperatures and the thermal cycling they are exposed to?
looking for how bad the problem is, so I can research best solutions without excessive cost of advanced alloys instead of 304 stainless.

Mine failed at the weld. Good clean break, turbos didn't like it though and neither did the checkbook.
1roadie Thanks this. -
had one that came loose. only noticed it when the turbos started making different noises and took it to the shop. tore up both turbos, cat paid the bill. got lucky was still under warranty.

Not the best solution but the most cost effective and the only one 100% guaranteed to not have a repeat failure is to leave the sleeves out completely.
-
I agree, I should have done that but though since it made it 400k before the first failure maybe the newer ones would last longer......or they should make a turbine wheel that will survive a high speed chunk of stainless.

Thats one clean burning motor! No soot anywhere, the EPA should be so proud.

here is what was left of mine. -
I worked at Freightliner and did the same truck twice, He brought it in for something else and I could hear the rattling of anouther failure, he was furious with me saying it was my fault, I called Cat and got him in earlier. He went in and they had a whole line of trucks everyone of them getting the same thing. He came right over and apologised. I loved those Acerts.
I retired but in the neighborhood they are removing and re powering all the logging trucks that had the new Cats. -
Can you post the number of the places removing the Cats I am looking for one to power a glider I am going to have built.Jfaulk99 Thanks this.

I would think that the repowering a truck over an exhaust sleeve seems a little excessive, especially when the gasket without the sleeve can be gotten from cat.
