Thanks everyone for all the advice, greatly appreciate it. We will continue looking for a better deal on schools. Ideally, he wants to be on own when have the CDL and not have to be tied to anyone. If he didn't want to go to oilfields, then it would be a good choice to go with a company sponsored school.
Another question is does it matter where the schooling is done. For instance if we live in Minnesota and he goes to another state to do it, can he obtain CDL still in MN or whever he wants?
Zangief, thanks for advice. I was hoping someone would tell me they had experience with Transportation Center for Excellence. He is meeting him tomarrow so we will see what he says. Not feeling it though. Problem is there are not many alternatives here. We hear of this 1900 training from it seems a lot of people but never can locate it or noone seems to know the name, lol. I will look into Roehl it seems good, but ya the commitment is a while.
need some honest advice

That would be great, close to here we have a tech school that has the trucking course, but it is a whole semester long and costs around 3000. Yours sounds much better. Still looking though.

Go to Baker Hughes and Halliburton's web sites, and whatever others you can think of. Search through the jobs and submit as many apps. for entry level jobs as you can. I know both of these companies will send you through there CDL schools. I just got my Class A in Dec. and just got hired on and it looks like I get to go through there training too. Although they did say there is a possibility I might get to skip it if I do well. There are also Employment Placement companies that do a lot of the pre hireing for the oil companies too. Look into that. Look at Craigslist.

If he doesnt mind doing the operator jobs there are several companies that will take you w/o a CDL and train you. after completing training you have a CDL and a job. Missouri Basin "hires" out of the school I attended, but they wont hire new drivers till spring. in my case I do not want to wait till march to go out there, take a road test, and fail/ get sent home because I havnt been driving for several months. Of the 3 guys "hired"on failed his drive test, and the other two have been told to call back every week for the past two months. every week they call, every week they get told not yet... chances are they will fail their road tests too by the time they get out there.
go to www.searchtempest.com its a craigslist search engine. select "jobs" and "transport" also select any states that have oilfields.
if he really doesnt mind doing the operator search "driver operator" as for your search terms. a few company ads will pop up. they are some of the ones I was refering to that will train. I believe Calfrac, Oasis, baker hughes are a few of them... there are others. -
Did you get hired by applying on-line or in person? Even though they put you through training do you think you still only got hired cause you have a CDL? Thanks. Also are you going through ND or TX?

Thanks so much for info! So when you say Missouri Basin has someone do a test, is it their own driving test? Is it similar to the one taken for CDL? Also which school do they hire from? I have always heard such great things of them but know they could not be too good to be true, lol.
I guess we were attracted to thier local rep and family vibe. We also looked in Calfrac and were recommended but now their ads say 6 months exp required. I will search your link though and see what I can find, thanks.
