I've only been with covenant 3 months, but so far have not seen anything worthy of telling people to avoid starting their career there... There are kernels of truth to every negative story, and unfortunately not a corresponding number of good stories to balance it out. I've been meaning to tell of my experiences, but frankly have been too #### busy - (probably why negative accounts appear so overwhelming)
But my execute summary is: training company with low HR standards. Huge turnover I attribute to 1) most employees aren't meant for truck driving period - let alone OTR (let alone team). 2) Most support staff (dispatch. Safety. Etc) are not particularly helpful to random new drivers (probably because so many quit right away). But once you run a few loads on time with good communication, trust starts to build and things move smoothly. 3) training is your responsibility: you can skate through playing dumb & getting bailed out every new obstacle, or you can proactively ask, watch, and learn.
After 35 days of training & maybe another 2 weeks out on my own (teamed), I was running 5000-6000 miles a week consistently. Non-hazmat teams probably won't match that, but the opportunities are there if you want to work. If you take all 48 hours to do a 36-hour run, don't be surprised if you sit the next day at a truck stop... And if you call the receiver in advance & are told not to deliver early, throw on some raggedy clothes, crawl under truck & trailer and do a thorough inspection. Then you can confidently stop along the way & volunteer for a dot inspection. A pass is an extra $75 in that week's check and it helps out the company safety score so the prepass stays green... Or you could watch jerry springer and listen to disgruntled steering wheel holders gripe in the lounge... Your call...
Having said that, after 6-12 months still I intend to leave for more lucrative waters, but if I had to start from scratch again I'd still pick covenant because (as a recent grad) you're not going to beat $1000/week anywhere else...Last edited: Jan 29, 2012

...My apologies for not getting back to you sooner CasinoGal. Ron & I were on a long haul from Bloomington CA to Louisville KY, then another one to Somerset NJ. We were doing some serious team driving. So to address your leaning to Covenant, because of their training program. That is the main reason Ron and I went with their program. We had a trainer who has been driving for almost 40 years, so we learned a tremendous amount. He did not sugar coat what it would be like over the road. He told us like it is (expletives and all!) I believe attitude and determination to do your best is what will make you or break you in this industry. Before we chose Covenant, I read the posts both negative and positive, but I also took the time to speak directly with some drivers. Just visit a Pilot or Flying J. You can talk to them yourself. You can't miss a Covenant truck! : ) One thing our trainer told us. Don't quit during your first six months. If you do, you haven't really given OTR a chance. You will have days of frustration, but I can say with all honesty; Ron and I truly enjoy this. We are both positive people who are proactive about communicating any challenges we face. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
...One thing I can tell you is about our truck assignment. We have a roomy Cascadia. First thing I checked what the tires and breaks. We have had an awesome experience in our truck. From the very start, I was determined to eat healthy. We found the Coleman refrigerator that plugs into the 12 volt. So we avoid all that fried stuff at the truck stops. (unless my husband sneaks into the hamburger joints LOL)
...Overall, we have had more positive than negative. We went out on our own for the first time during the holidays, so we did come in at a chaotic time. We worked through it and from all our experiences to date, we have gained SOO much knowledge. As our trainer originally said, once you have given this a full six months, you won't want to do anything else. I do believe he was right.
Until next time....

...Wow, my first REAL heavy snow with major reduced visibility! My grip was clinched tight for hours. Sure was glad when Ron's turn came around! So, into the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel, then out. SNOW everywhere! Ron is inching along with all the other drivers. Boy, I'll be glad when we can pull over and stop. Already passed two accidents on I-70. We are truly getting our experience increasing following distance, reducing speed and No cruise control! What a day. Dag nabbit!! another up ahead. Looks like a car spun around and hit the concrete barrier!
...Well, like double yellow said, Some are just not cut out for OTR driving. This is one of those things where you have to have some good nerves and serious patience. I also met a young lady the other day who worked as a gate guard. (Really lovely young woman) She was asking about getting into OTR driving. I was honest with her. First, if you are a VERY structured person, this may not be for you. Up at 7:30am, have your coffee. Makeup done by 8am. Out the door by 8:15. Arrive at work by 9am. Punch clock. work routine thru the AM hours. LUNCH. Back by 1pm. work routine thru the noon hours. Punch clock. Work your way home through rush hour. Cook dinner, glass of wine, watch routine show, bed by 9:30. If that works for you? Well, OTR might not be for you. This job is constant change! Each day has new challenges. You have to think quickly and make constant decisions. Tomorrow will bring something new and you don't quite know what it will be, but I can say this. The BEAUTY that we see all over this country is worth all the spontaneity.
...OK, I'm done. We made it through the rough snow situation. Moving at a good pace now. (sure glad Ron is driving, so I can Facebook!...Just love my MIFI) I know. Such a Girl!!
Until next time...CasinoGal and nightrider57 Thank this. -

TransportHER, when you guy got your truck what kind of shape was it in, What year? Does covenant allow you to mount say a VuQube or something like that to get direct tv or dish?
-
Where in WV are you going for CDL training?
Buckhannon, WV for us. Tomorrow starts our second week. -
We will be going to the local vo-tech in Martinsburg WV. Classes start the end of March for 12 weeks. Good luck to you!

Hey astarcher. Mifi is similar to Wifi (Wireless Fidelity) Except it is a mobile device that allows you to connect wirelessly pretty much anywhere you can get a cell signal. So, while my husband is driving, I can check emails etc.

astarcher74: Truck was in great shape. A few minor dings from previous driver. It needed a good cleaning. It is a 2011 Cascadia. We really like it. Very roomy and plenty of storage space. As for the dish? Not sure about that. Would have to ask.Running Bear Thanks this.
