I was just looking at the meter on the radio, i dont have a seperate meter yet.

Also after i release the mic button the ANT light stays lit for a second or two, oddly enough if i touch the antennae by its base the light goes out.

Probably a ground proplem. When you touch the antenna you ground it.

I don't know much about the Classic's, but I have a 2011 Freightliner Cascadia. It has all kinds of ground issues and the mirrors are plastic. I bought what they call a perch. It's a steal bar that fits in the screw holes of the mirrors. You simply take out one of top screws and replace it with the bar then attach your mirror mount to it. I haul a refer so the other problem I had was geting above the trailer since the mirror mount was so low. So I bought a steel extention bar and have had no problems since.

Another driver suggested i take a short peice of wire and ground the antennae to the truck. I thought the mirror bars were steel but they are aluminum as is the mount itself. My truck has a silver visor above the windshield, i tried to remove one of the bolts to it to ground the wire under the bolt but couldnt get the bolt out, it just turns. I think my ground problem is between the antennae and the mount because when i connect the wire to both it grounds properly.

I still need to get a seperate swr meter, will most likely borrow one from another driver to see how the radio is actually doing.

    NOT ALWAYS TRUE .......

The lifespan of poorly made antennas is the problem unles it's realy bad it will work about the same .....

Decent coax, and a good antenna can make any radio a great setup. Cheap coax and a junk antenna can make any "big" radio seem small. Go with the length of coax you need to get from the radio to the antenna, metal antennas are better than short fiberglass whips, though there are some nice fiberglass antennas out there. Make sure you have a good ground, mirror brackets generally have a rubber insulator between the body and bars themselves, as well as doors hinges cause ground issues on Classics and Petes. It's always best to make sure you have a good ground. Bonding strap is the best thing to use, I use 1" flat stainless steel braided ground strap from Napa.

" Cheap coax " Unless your talking something that is not made to spec
COAX is COAX at 27 Mhz ....

CHEAP ANTENNAS .... Unless we are talking the 18 inxh mag moun
onch you get over 4 foot long most should work fine they may not last very long .... A good ground is a must and being clear of as much as you can makes a diffrence too ...
