Ok since my company does not allow inverters and I would like to take pre-made healthy meals with me I need some opinions on coolers that run on 12V. There are many of them at truck stops, but I would like to see what people say about specific models of coolers.

What cooler do you use? What do you like about it? What do yo dislike about it?

Have read the cooking the truck thread, so this thread is to discuss coolers only....

They are all pretty much junk . Parts fail often and they only cool 20 degrees cooler than the temperature around them . If you're running your heater pretty high they'll never get anything really cold .

I have a Koolatron P-27 which I figured was probably a piece of junk and would be happy if I got a year out of it when I bought it... almost 20 years ago. :biggrin_2554:

It works well. Almost too well.

It fits perfectly behind the passenger seat, on end. Just like a mini-fridge. My truck has a 12-volt outlet on the front of the bunk right there too.

Koolatron.......maybe there are better one but it works fine. Also I dehydrate fruit and veggies while at home. I have containers with different things in them. Once dry I put them in the vitamix to powder them or chop them. When I get read I to eat I just add hot water and pow.....super soups.....with NO ADDITIVES!

You can store lots of food in this way and its extremely healthy. I use jerky for portien, that i make myself. This started as a way to prepare for treks in the mountains to hike and camp back in the early 90s but I have put it to good use now.

I try very hard to stay away from foods with more ingredients than are necessary.

Good luck stay healthy its very hard for many truckers I know.

I had a Coleman...the plug melted after about six months. Replaced it with an Igloo, and I love it.

Mine rides in the sleeper during the day, and I close the privacy curtains so I can maintain the sleeper temp and thus the cooler interior temp. If I leave it unplugged while sleeping, it will still keep things relatively cold overnight.

didn't say what your budget was.i have 2 40 qt ac/dc ref/freezers.i use 1 as a fridge,1 as a freezer.each cost about $400..look at compactappliance dot com.i've had mine over 5 years.it has digital temp controls that you can set.the drawback is the weight.each weighs about 60lbs.empty.i am not a company rep or anything, just a satisfied customer.

I'm liking that idea about the dehydrating veggies. What kind of dehydrator do you use?

I gave up on the "coolers" after losing $40 of groceries twice because either the fan quit or the plug melted.
I went old school and bought a 36 quart xtreme cooler
