I went through the EB scale on CA58 in Tehachapi the other day, the one that looks abandoned. I only have 4500lbs on my trailer so I knew I was ok on my weight and I had set my trailer tandems to the 40 ft mark. I guess the chippie behind the desk was bored because he had me stop and he ran outside with a tape measure to check my axles then waved me on by, lol. That's the first time I've had my axle length checked anywhere that has those kingpin to rear axle limits.
That backed up the line enough that about half a dozen trucks bypassed the scale. YW fellas, lol!![]()
CHP are picky, aren't they? Checking axle length

Did they also measure you bumper to bumper?
-
He measured from the rear of the trailer to the axle. I pull an old Western Express trailer and was told by one of their drivers that the black stripe is the 40 foot mark from the kingpin, which is where my rear axle was set at.

For each truck that bypassed the scale can be considered as one good deed for the day. So you are saved for a while (People helping helping)
Jfaulk99 Thanks this. -
the last time i checked, the correct way to measure the length was from the kingpin to the center of the rear axle. maybe i am wrong, but i thought that is how it was done.
-
Cadillac dude, much easier to measure back to rear tandem axle. 53' trailer with 3' kingpin setting and 40' bridge law means 10' from back door to back axle, right ?
-
And your point is ?? He didn't give you a citation and you went on your way..End of story. Arizona is getting a LOT more "picky" than California is. More OOS violations for even one brake out of adjustment, more CVSA points assessed, cell phone tickets of up to $4000 for commercial drivers etc. I've been cut a lot more slack in California than Arizona, Nevada or Texas anytime..
-
Not "back door"...from the farthest point on the rear of the trailer. Which includes those "dock bumpers", or even a bent back DOT bar!
Been there....done that! -
As long as he's willing to run out of that scale house and do all the work, we're just getting the service that our citations paid for. I say "measure that trailer- every time, please!"

I didn't realize that sharing a personal experience required a point.sevenmph, Dewey120 and corneileous Thank this.
