I think this thread was about which GPS recommendations, not whether or not you choose to use one. I think the OP was looking for information on which GPS to buy, not opinions from drivers that don't use them or can't afford them.

I've never used the dashmount. I always window mount to the upper left corner of the windshield. I would get a dash mount from the TA or something. They usually run about 25 bucks.
-
I never said I couldn't afford a GPS. What I said was (paraphrased) I can think of far better and more useful things to put $500 against.

Can anyone tell me which gps units will work in Canada?

Thanks cc194217! Great site. Looks like they have anything you would need in a truck.

OK I was tired of straining my eyes to read my small screen Garmin Zumo so I purchased the following:
Acer A100 7"tablet w/Android O/S ($249-Wally World)
CoPilot Live for Android (only the car version for now $29.95...more in a minute)
an Akron holder from Amazon ($12.95)
It has been working very well so far. I use it as a tool to keep me on the route I lay out...not just the one it chooses. I always check the atlas to make sure of routing. In the few instances I have messed up and came across a restricted road the app is VERY quick to recalculate. Plus it will allow you to chose certain restrictions for routing; like avoid toll roads and road preferences as well as 13' motorhome routing. I can drag the route to where I want to go or tap the screen to make a marker come up and click "route through here" so I get the functionality of Streets and Trips. Plus it will provide up to two alternate routes just like Google.
The Premium car version was my cheapest option to make sure I was going to like this app. The reviews were literally 50/50 between love and hate. I also emailed ALK about the truck version being used on the 3.2 Android O/S and they do not support it at this time. I do know from reading some reviews that this very model tablet and Android o/s are working fine with the truck version. I will use this until they release the Premium version of Truck.
Another reason for wanting the tablet was because it has the features I found lacking on the standalone units. MP3 player, audio out, ability to run Android apps. Plus it has email and web browsing when either tethered or when wifi is available.
All in all I am very pleased with this choice.mrtrdrvr Thanks this. -
Then you will for sure have problems! The trucker ones are the ONLY way to go I think. I love mine but plan my route then turn it on. Like I said the Cobra 7750 platinum

I've been using the CoPilot Truck units for a couple of years now. Started with the 430, now have the 440 and see no need to upgrade. Canadian routes are a little hit and miss, but I have backups... Microsoft Streets and Trips and CoPilot Truck Laptop. Between those 3, I have no excuse whatsoever for ever getting lost or being somewhere I have no business being.
Dieselboss Thanks this.
