This is the first time I read this. You drive someone elses truck, you are his employee. You aren't leasing the truck with a chance of ownership. I'm sure US DOL would love to hear about this.
They can not take unauthorized deductions out of your paycheck, nor can they coerse you into doing it. Many small outfits have this misconception. Large outfits will drag you in a back room and get you to sign a promissary note which is illegal also. The only way a company can make you pay for stuff like this is if there is a pre-employment agreement on paper and signed by both parties.
I would of quit yesterday.
The US DOL has jurisdiction on this,
Call this number and the lady will advise you what to do.
1-866-4-USWAGE
They'll tell you to contact your local office which ever is closer.
Ft Lauderdale (954) 356-6896
Tampa (813) 288-1242
Besides all that, I frequented the Arcadia Walmart and spent many nights at Port Charlotte. Never drop a trailer there. As you found out the hard way. That's not the best area. That area is very anti-truck and parking is slim.
The rest area on the other side of the interstate has security. You won't be able to drop your trailer, but you might get away with slipping the guy a $20 and parking the truck and trailer overnight. It never hurts to ask. That's where I always parked. The guards are pretty nice.
Back at the X220?221 in Ellenton there is a small Pilot with no parking. But the motel beside it has a lot and will let you park there for $10. -
Wow 4 OMGs from reading the OP!
A company driver paying his own Worker's Comp!
Working as a company driver on a 1099!
Being charged an escrow as a company employee (and $1500 at that!)!
Being charged for stolen equipment and/or paying the insurance deductible!
Zleinad, does it say "SUCKER" on your forehead? -
LOL, it sure did feel like it did but thats all about to change! As a matter of fact it changed already! Sad part is they did this to about 100 drivers for about past 7 years! We got the case and we are moving forward with. I was advise not to speak about it till everything is resolved. But i will say this. Like many of you stated before company owner is wishing every sec of the day that he never tried to screw me like this!
Ill let you guys the end result!
Semi Crazy Thanks this. -
Good on you. When I was young and naive and just starting out in the work world I had a guy try crap like this on me. I would have settled for $1,500, but by time the labour board was finished with him I got over $7,000.
-
the owner prolly stoled his own tires too lol i hope he gets a good lawyer and shuts that place down!!!
-
What I would like to know is what agency is helping you, The Labor Board or an Attorney ? You can at least tell us that !
-
so I can send you a bill anytime for my lawyering fees correct
