I was thinking about trying Swift's flatbed division, I'd like some honest thoughts on that please. I haven't pulled a skateboard before and I felt I could try there first, in case it doesn't work out I wouldn't feel too bad about moving on. If you have some negative s### to say please be specific and does anyone know if it make sense or more money to team on flatbeds.

If your just starting out you won't have a 2nd chance if it don't work out I have NEVER SEEN A SWIFT FLATBED TRUCK rolling down the road I would start with someone that has a proven reputation in the flatbed industry
As for as a team flatbed if you had good long runs than ya but in my operation it would never work most shippers and receivers are only open 8-5 Monday/Friday some places do start sooner

Like Bayou HS said, go with somebody with a reputation in this business. Maverick, Mercer, combined transport, etc, etc etc anybody but them so you can learn the right way not from a carrier that is mostly dedicated to cheap van freight.

Thanks to both of you for the in put...and this whole forum has been great for info I have always wondered about. I am a Nam Vet with a disability pension from the VA but I am still allowed to work as a truck driver; when I asked about it some years back they told me not to worry about any disability-working conflict because truck driving is not a "real job." True story. They told me it is "common labor" and you may have 100% disability and still work as a driver. WTF over? I am not gona agrue with a good thing. I played retired for a few years and got sooo bored...now I want back in the truck, need to jump through some hoops since I have kept CDL w/tx and medcard current but been off the road a while. No problem, old guys know people in good places. I want the money I can save driving hard for a couple years then maybe I'll try the retirement thing again.

Personally, I think you can do better than Swift. You might be able to find an o/o willing to train you providing you can prove to him that you can drive. Start calling companies and find out what their requirements are. If worse comes to worse, go to Swift and put in your time.

Thank you but I have more than 5 yrs. without working for a company. As I said, I have to jump through some hoops now to get refreshed and back in the seat then I can pick and choose as I would like. I need 3 to 6 mos. saddle time to even be insurable with a good company...vans and reefers and double are what I've done and may need to do again for the short time but FLBD is what I'd like...I guess even if teams don't make sense. Can you still do a regular $1000/wk. solo somehow, somewhere?

There are some (not sure of all that do) flatbed companies that require you to take a physical again that will have you lifting bulky weights (to mimick tarps) climbing ladders, etc. Basically seeing if you are physically capable of doing flatbed. I know of two companies personally: Sherman Bros Inc out of Oregon and System Transport out of Washington, Just wanted to warn you so you can ask.

I don't know much about flatbed options on the West Coast. Most "traditional" flatbed companies don't even hire from the West Coast. The OP has no recent experience and no flatbed experience, so the options would be further reduced. I would research some companies that stick to the Western Region.

I don't see much value in running team pulling flat/step/RGN. There is not a lot of drop and hook. Almost all loads are live load/live unload. There is a lot of regional/short haul work. There is also little demand for this service.

Sorry didnt catch that you some exp. and the answer is yes you can make that. I couldnt get you hooked up with any of our O/O's as you would need 3 yrs verifiable in last 5 years and 1 yr recent flatbed. You could esily make that kinda dough even at 22.5% of line haul here.

Yes, I am aware of that, thank you very much. My disability doesn't effect me physically, I look forward to some real work again. And I always thought that one requirement for flatbedding was you had to a little off mentally anyway...I think I fit right in. eh?
