opinions on glider kits

Just my opinion...

The last glider kit I was in, was the first and only "totalled truck" accident I was involved in.

I don't know what the "specs" are on later models. But we had a recall on the ones we used. It seems they were having issues with frames cracking around the steering box area.

A fact I discovered at 60 mph in Dayton, OH.

You can't run fast enough to give me one......

 

In my opinion this is the only way to go. A new truck with a older more reliable/fuel efficient engine

they all make them...or at one time did....

the premise behind them is a new truck with your used running gear....i.e...if you have a totaled 'shaker with good powertrain and axle's...they will set the guages and everything to work with the motor, tranny and rears...

i think itd be a good deal except for the fact it's spendy to have someone transfer all your power train over...and when you put 'shaker parts on a pete...they will ( trust me ive seen it) look at you wierd when ordering parts

 

Even wierder....being stopped at an Ohio scale, having your paperwork looked at while driving an International, then having to wait until the next morning for Mississippi State Offices to open up and PROVE that your title (which says Peterbuilt) is correct.

Mississippi does not allow the re-titling of glider kits...or at least they didn't in the late 80's and early 90's.

True Story.....

 

The truck in my avatar has a glider kit, because of a rollover accident before we acquired it. Only problem I found was getting parts for it, as Kenworths standard reply was 'Thats an invalid number'. Hence me sourcing parts from Freightliner, and never having another problem... Other than body parts etc of course.
In Edmonton, Freightliner is open 24 hours and friendly, and Kenworth is only open till 1am. Another reason for using Freightliner...

 

If the motor and tranny are remanned by the original manufacturing company (i.e. Detroit diesel and eaton) then there is a very good chance that you can but additional warranty coverage. I know for a fact that Det offers an additional warranty(for purchase) on their reman motors (the ones they reman in their facility for sure, possibly also for ones remanned at a Det diesel dealer).
