I'm Baltimore, Maryland-based. I've procrastinated long enough and I think this year is the time to pursue a CDL Class A training. I'm hoping it's possible to do this via online course, if not, well I'll have to pick my self and go to school. Anyone know if an online course for CDL training is possible? I'm thinking not because it requires hands-on training, but so do most professions that are available via online course (i.e. Nursing, Phlebotomy, Physical Therapy etc.). It's 2012, so what has changed? I hope the rules and regulations didn't get more ridiculous? Usually accreditation matters, so what do I have to look for? I'm not here to waste time and money. My plan is to eventually move to North Dakota (western?) when my apartment rent lease is up this July. I have about 5-6 months time frame. I have not read the thick booklet about CDL yet. I'm working on it.

I hear something about online course but they cant teach you like getting out there and doing it.No online course can teach you what driving a truck is all about. IMOH.

As far as I know they only do it at schools. You can't learn how to properly back a truck unless you're in the truck. An online "simulation" just isn't the same as sitting there and seeing everything. Most classes are at least 4 weeks (if you go during the week) and only 1 of those weeks you spend in an actual classroom. The rest of the time you're out in and around the trucks. If you're looking for an online course because it's "easier" then I'd make sure you're ready for trucking and that you don't want it because you feel it's an "easy" job. It's not the hardest job in the world but it's not the easiest either.

Did you wake up at the crack of crack??? Seriously!! An online course for driving a truck???? Yes the rules and regulations have become way more ridiculous as the people making and enforcing them ARE waking up at the crack of crack. Look for at least a 160hr course.

Actually, Sage at Isothermal Community College offers an on-line course. I didn't look into it, but most likely, after completing the classroom part on-line, you will need to go in person to complete the practical part of the course.

My school is All State Career in Baltimore, and we have 480 hours, including 280 driving/range time. It's expensive ($10K) and long (6 months), but I'm rich (not really) and have lots of free time to give.

    We have 4 classes:

Weekday: morning, afternoon, or evening M-Th. 5 hours each (20 hours/wk)

    or

    Weekend: 8am-6:30pm (lunch from 1-1:30) Sat/Sun (20 hours)

It is PTDI (only one of 2 in MD- the other is College of Southern MD) & CVTA certified (only one in MD) . Financial aid is available.

There are about 40 trucks here to hone your skills on. The bad thing is there is no shifting range. All driving and shifting is learned on the mean streets of Baltimore.

www.truckschool.com Located in Florida. Still have to go there and do the resident training. Very nice track to learn on before they turn you loose on the highways.

If you can I'll be pissed after all my man had to go through to get his CDL...

Just keepin' it real. I'm not trying to discourage you but I'm not sure that's
feasible please look into your local community college.

Oops, NOT Sage at Isothermal.. My bad. It is Crowder driving school at Crowder college that offers an on-line course starting at $975.00.
