May Trucking Home Time Question?

Hello everyone. I'd first like to thank everyone here since I've received SO much valuable info on their experiences here which has helped me (So far) steer me towards my first company getting into this business. I am currently a student and am scheduled to graduate in a couple weeks. My record is clean, no felonies, etc... So my choices of who for my 'pre-hires' is pretty much open. Of course, I was pre-hired with Werner, but after doing my research I have decided that wouldn't be the best option for me. I have spoken with a student in this week's graduating class who is going with May, as well as my research, and talking to a current May driver and his experiences has led me to SERIOUSLY consider May as my first, and hopefully permanent, company. So far everything I have been able to dig up tells me this is the type of company I want to work for as well as the people that currently work for I would be proud to call my 'extended family'. However, that being said, I am a little concerned with one issue, and that would be concerning my Home Time. Now, before anyone start slinging mud at me as a newbie, although I am VERY open to critisism as well as any of your thoughts, I would like to say that I am not a 20 something kid (Not that every 20 something kid falls into this category, and NO offense intended to such), who has decided to jump into this career on a whim without doing their research on what this career involves. I am at a point in my life to where both my marriage as well as my lifestyle, finances as well as my homelife is at a point that is in a position to handle me being gone for long periods of time, and both of us are okay with the idea.
I have filled out the online App, and am awaiting a call from a recruiter to discuss further, but I would be very interested to hear your opinions on this. I currently live in San Anselmo Ca, and have been told by one of my instructors that one of the downsides to May is that you aren't allowed to take your truck home and have to leave it at the nearest terminal. The nearest terminal to me (if I understand it correctly), is about 2.5-3 hours away. If I am to be out for 3 weeks, and home for 3 days, I am concerned that I might want to look for a company closer to home so it wouldn't be a case of needing to have someone from home drive 3 hrs to pick me up for my 'home time', drive another 3 to get home, then do it again two days later to get me back to my truck. I've been told that a few companies 'say' they will make your last stop within 50 miles of your home and then allow you to take the truck home with you for your time off. Is this a case of me just having to suck it up and that is 'part of the profession' or am I missing something or another option?
Thanks in advance for your opinions and thoughts.

Depending on where you are at, May might have a drop yard close to you. Whet exactly are you at with regards to a big city? (I'm too lazy to look it up right now, on home time). Everyone's situation is different and they might have a customer near you and allow you to park at a nearby truckstop. That would be something to discuss further with a recruiter.

From what I've been told (currently in training with may) unless you have some type of approved secure location, you have to leave the truck at a yard/terminal. Efon has been with the company longer than I have so he knows more about specifics, but I believe thats what they tell us in orientation/training. That being said, I looked up San Anselmo and you are closer to the Lodi and Yolo yards, like 1.5 hrs I think?

Now, again, what is said and what actually happens well they are different stories. I live not too far from the yard in denver, and before I Joined May, every holiday and on occassion I would see a May truck parked at my apartment complex. Not sure why if we lived so close to the denver yard they would bring the truck home, maybe so they wouldn't have to drive a personal vehicle, or they just didnt have one. but when they mentioned not taking the trucks home at orientation in my head i was thinking "bull ####" lol

I am basically in the 'North Bay Area' just above San Francisco. I was planning on asking a recruiter whenever they call, or when/if I need to call them about it. I had heard from my instructor that May wouldn't allow me to leave it at a nearby truckstop or round the corner customer. But, then again, he did say that Werner was a good company to work for off the bat....:biggrin_25523:

yeah, everyone has their own experiences and opinions about stuff :)
best bet is to just ask the recruiter, like I mentioned above, we have 4 yards (on my list anyway) in cali
    good luck with school!

Thx. I just found a post talking about the drop yards 1.5-2hrs from the house. (Amazing what my lazy *** finds when I actually search huh?)
I was just hoping to not have to inconvenience the wife into asking that she get up at 2am to drive 4 hrs to get me home before she gets up at 6am to goto work during the middle of the week. LOL...
Just as an extra added non-related info, my other option I am looking into is Schneider. But with me living on the West Coast, I've heard going with May would be more likely to have legitimate home time.

The closest drop yard is in Yolo. 15 minutes north of Sacramento on i5. Exit 541 I think. If you want to, you can park a personal vehicle there. I would suggest nothing fancy. It is fenced and has an overnight security guard.

I've had a couple students on my truck from N. Cali. Yolo is the yard they were required to park the truck and trailer at.

I appreciate your concern about "home time", however, if that is your number one priority coming right out of the shoot, you might want to rethink becoming an OTR truck driver ;-)

Hello! I live in Fairfax!! And yes, parking in Yolo is a little inconvenient, but it takes less than 2 hours to drive it... I'm happy here at May, and if you're out a lot, the Yolo thing is not really an issue. I rent a car when I go home, the Enterprise in Woodland will drive up to the yard and pick you up, just FYI. I noticed parking for personal vehicles was a little tight, as in, there were no open spaces at that time... It would be neat to know someone from San Anselmo is driving for May. :biggrin_25519: So far I've been getting tons of miles, and enjoying this company, it would be a good place for you to start, I believe. Pre-Welcome Aboard! :yes2557:
