My CDL comes up for renewel later this year.
In 2008 I had to jump thru all the new hoops to
get my hazmat endorsement (documentation,
birth certificate, etc.) .
Question: Do I hafta jump thru those same hoops
again or do they keep that information on file??
I know the fee is still the same but is the
paper chase still in effect??

It's probably on a State by State basis. I can only speak of my DMV and they do scan those items into their records so they are always on file. WHy don't you call your home State DMV and ask before you waste time to go down there to find out you need something else. They may also scan those items into records.
goodchoice10 Thanks this. -
I think the only time you (or any other driver) will have to jump through the hoops you mentioned is when you're adding Hazmat to an existing CDL or moving a hazmat CDL from one state to another. But like was said, it might vary by state so better to be prepared by making a phone call. Same endorsement renewals and same-state address changes are generally pretty easy and painless.

I believe you will have to take the backround check again and pay for it. Then, if you have a TWIC card... when that expires you will have to pay for the same backround check again. Fun huh?

Check your state DMV site but every state requires hazmat retesting and another background check on renewal . They don't keep fingerprints on file .goodchoice10 Thanks this. -
yep. i added it back on 2 years ago. and was told we have to do the whole spill EVERY time we renew. birth, background, test, money,
i had to test 6 times becuase i was ONE answer from passing. and every test was different. one whole day spent at the dmv.
when i didn't have hazmat. every job i looked at wanted it. now i have it. and no one wants it. i can see for a job that hauls on a daily basis. but since i've only had one load in all my 12 years. and that one load was only a 10 lb. container. 12 years ago. makes it really hard to justify keeping it.
one has to wonder why anyone would want to be a trucker these days. with all the BS rules. -
I just renewed my CDL and had to retake the H/M test and pay for B/G check. It is required as part of Homeland Security...
It is a TSA ruling
The TSA Hazardous Materials Endorsement Threat Assessment Program conducts a security threat assessment for any driver seeking to obtain, renew, or transfer a hazardous materials endorsement (HME) on a state-issued commercial drivers license (CDL).
The program was implemented to meet the requirements of the PATRIOT Act (pdf, 848KB), which prohibits states from issuing a license to transport hazardous materials in commerce unless a determination has been made that the driver does not pose a security risk. The Act further requires that the risk assessment include checks of criminal history records, legal status, and relevant international databases.
If you seek to obtain, renew, or transfer an HME on your CDL, you must apply for a security threat assessment. TSA rules require you to begin applying for the security threat assessment at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your CDL.
