This where you turned into an attack. I told you I worked 8 yrs. in hotels 30 days a month. Company paid motels and $25 food allowance a day. I got paid 18000-20000 a year which was pretty good for 1972 considering I did not not have one single bill the whole time either. So guess where almost all of that money went, into funds and cds. You have any idea what compound interesst can do.....no probably not. This whole idea is so for out of the realm of your possabilities that you dont have a clue. You are just living paycheck to paycheck i would imagine.
As for the company I worked for it was Moore Business Forms. I have a pension that I can draw later plus I have company matched 401K.

As for this part....20yrs on concrete up and down ladders, putting in 400 hrs or more overtime every year, smelling like ink, I had the desire and the resources to call it quits. Alot of people that are successful retire....look at all your sports figures, race car drivers, teachers and the people you have no respect for military people.

I am paying for my own, but that is not really any concern of yours.
You should read a little more. I stated government funds are better directed at training our youth.
Problem with this is our youth do not want to work. Our youth are spoiled. They do not want to work 40hr weeks, little lone overtime. Why do you think we are losing so many jobs to other countries. Why are plants closing and moving, because todays youth does not want to work for anything they want it given to them and they want it right now. No one wants to work their way up from the bottom, they want what the other guy that has been there 20yrs has.

And last....we know nothing about you. Others and myself have given you a little history about us and our work history. You do not post your age. You have not commented on your work history. I imagine you can not hold a job and the reason you are down on middle age people ( thats right with a life expectency of 70 or more that makes us middle aged ) is because our aged people have probably fired you so many times. You dont think a person my age is entiled to their 3rd job in a lifetime. I can asure you companies like that. They like loyal , consistent, dependable workers ( you might have to look those words up ). Those are things you will not find in todays young workforce.:biggrin_25513:

i will take back the statement that "todays youth" and replace it with " the majority of todays youth ". There are some young people that have the desire to be good hard workers but it is not a majority. Most of todays youth are to spoiled by us wanting to give them so much that they expect to be given..... instead of earning.

You're previous work and social security deductions helped keep my grandparents in social security and kept them safe. I'll gladly pay more in taxes to help subsidize your retraining. Despite the fact we live in a throw-away society where even people are disposible, no one is an old fart until he is six feet in the ground.

And your point is ...what? If either one of those 2 guys decides that they want to drive a truck, just who are you to criticize them?

Who's blowing smoke? He sounded pretty serious to me.

On what do you base this assumption, and what business is it of yours if he did?

Nonetheless, don't insult anybody's intelligence with statements like that. You know full well nobody "runs the copier at Kinko's" for 20 years.

Wrong. If I'm not mistaken you are eligible for retirement from the military after 20 years with full benefits and pension, and if that's true, I say let them enjoy it the way they see fit.

Face what? You don't know him from the man in the moon, do you? You have absolutely no right whatsoever to comment on anyone else's circumstances.

Again, face what? Let me tell you, printing press operators do fairly well. This particular print shop probably found a good one, and was content to let him keep doing it if he wanted to. There's nothing wrong with that at all.

Well, guess what? If his training is part of benefit package that he earned while serving in this largely ungrateful nation's military, than we the taxpayer's ARE paying for it. How do you like that?

Well, that decision isn't yours to make.

No, you just lobbed a host of other insults his way, which stops HERE AND NOW!! GOT IT?!?

Well, too bad. We already are, so get over it.

Again, that would be his choice. With the sorry state that the trucking industry is currently in, a little help from the older generation would be a blessing, what with the younger generation thinking that the world owes them a living.

Hi everyone I have worked at Roehl for over five years. I started on flats but the tarps weighed more than me. I do van and curtainside out of the Newport
    Mn yard.

I've been looking at the 3-week training program which Roehl offers in Wisconsin. I called them today to see if they do any hiring from the Albany, NY area, and they said yes. A few questions:
    (1) The 2 closest terminals to me are Philadelphia, PA and Groveton, NH, both about 4½ hours from me. Would I have to drive there in my own car each time? Would my last drop-off be at one of those terminals and I bob-tail it home, or do they not allow you to take the truck home? Do they try to schedule your last drop off somewhere near your hometown (other than one of their terminals), and then you drive the truck home?
    (2) On your first day of the 3-week training program. are you considered an employee of Roehl? Once the 3 weeks are over, are you pretty much guaranteed a job with them? Or is it based on availability?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Congrats L.B. I just joined Roehl's Honor Program. I'll be starting Evo 2 in a few days. The Honor Program seemed like a real good plan for me too. Even though I do not have the G.I. Bill, having a steady paycheck, instead of worrying about how many miles I'm driving, is in my opinion, the best way to learn.

As for slip, I'm glad to see he's looking. With all the vets signing on with Roehl, it would be a constant source of torment for him. My story (and many others, I'm sure) will surely enrage him further, so I will provide an overview.

I went to a local truck driving school on a federal WIA (Workforce Investment Act) grant that the school staff told me about. The total amount of the grant was 4,800.00. I would have paid for the school myself, but it would have put my family in a bind, so I was thankful for it.

I've been paying taxes since I was 15, and I served my country in the U.S. Military for over 10 years. This is the first grant, or government program I have ever taken advantage of. I don't consider it a handout.

Slip is WAY out of line here. The benefits that anyone else enjoys, regardless of the source, is none of slips business. Others in this thread have done an excellent job responding to his ill-conceived notions, so I'll say no more. Just wanted to sound off, and show some support for others in this program.

    Zinger,
You may want to ask a Roehl rep about the distance you live from their various locations. My understanding is you need to live within 150 miles.
