A good sized rock hit my passenger side windshield (at very top of windshield) a couple of days ago and left a thumb sized crater. Now a crack has formed in this area and is working its way down. The crack is growing about 2 inches a day.
Is a cracked windshield an Out Of Service?
Does it affect my CSA score if inspected?
Thanks for your comments/help

I was taught any crack that can't be covered by a quarter needs fixed. Not sure if it is an OOS but it would fall in the category of vision obstruction and would surely result in csa points in an inspection.

Understand that I am just a regular driver not an expert.
.
. If you have two distinct separate windshields - one windshield pane for the driver and a completely separate pane for the passenger - then cracks in the passenger side are no problem.
.
.If you have a one piece windshield and the cracks appear on the driver side, it can be an OOS [out of service] especially if the crack is in your line of vision.Dewey120 Thanks this. -
I have a separate windshield for the drivers side and for the passenger side. I was hoping to get the passenger side fixed during my hometime in a week since I know a cheap place close to home.

If it's a 'crater', you need a new windshield. A cat-eye can be repaired if you catch it usually the day or two after it happens.
There's a lot of discrepency I've found from inspectors about what DQs you with a crack. One stated no cracks on the driver side window at all. One said only if it's where the wiper runs.
But, I passed an annual and a roadside inspection with a cracked driver side windshield. Had a horizontal crack from about 5 inches from the left edge up about four inches, and then flat across to just before the center pane started creeping upward about an inch. It was right near where my 'hood' ends for my vision.
The DOT officer pointed it out and I said I was well aware of it and if it crept upward at out of the 'hood' area of my vision I'd get it replaced. Got my little yellow sticker for a clean inspection. So, it really is up to the mood of the inspector.
Mostly, because cracked windshields happen all the time. I'm changing my windshields about once or twice a year it seems from mostly rock chips or stress from the cold. So, I think the DOT on a roadside are a little more lenient than the letter of the rulebook.Dewey120 Thanks this. -
Had a level one inspection today at the scale house in California (I-80, west of Sacramento) and got my green 2012 sticker. I still haven't had windshield replaced but the guy inspecting my truck didn't even seem to care about. The crack goes from the top to the bottom now.

i had an inspection about 6 months ago on a split window, i had a crack on the passenger side windsheild, the officer wrote it as a violation and explained that if it was on the driver side it would have been an out of service
