LOTS of sand trucks around Dilley, but I don't know who they are hauling for as nobody has logos on their trucks and I haven't talked to any drivers there.

i currently haul frac sand. the company im with starts out at 22% and work up to 25% of the load. O/O gets 67% for truck only and 80% if owning truck and trailer. each load pays different with each different oil company contract but an average way to figure it is $4 per mile loaded and $65 per hour detention. detention is paid for anything over two hours wait, loading or unloading. sometimes your in and out in less than two hours and others you might have to wait. i have sat on a well 96 hours before. most of the time its around two hours to load and less then six hours to unload if you have to wait. figure those rates then figure what your pecentage would be. figure in about 30% deadhead miles. no pay for that but with deadhead figured in it still avereges out to over $3 per mile all miles totaled usually. but keep in mind it is oilfield, it can go gangbusters for a long time or it can drop to nothing nearly overnight.

The sand business is really big right now and the company I just left is hiring drivers left & right that have no experiance in this business. They throw them in crappy trucks they leased and give them little onsight trianing. They don't care about the driver, they are in it to make as much money as possible. :biggrin_25513:
The drivers also are being ripped off because the owners are not disclosing fully as to what they are getting paid. :biggrin_25510:

Hauling frac sand as a company driver has been over all good to me as a company driver. Made more money doing this in such a short time but worked my arse off getting it too. :yes2557:
It's year round work come rain, snow or triple digit weather which can be extremely miserable.
I've been hearing that the business is slowing down quite a bit and will be leaving TX going to PA, ND ect.
It can be balls to the wall and run so hard that it's extremely tough to log let alone be safe or you sit a lot!

Just curious, what is so special about "frac sand"? Is it just regular sand like what you would find in a kid's sand box? What do they do with that stuff?

It's not just regular sand although if it is natural such as 20/40 white sand, it is mined. There is also synthetic sand which is usually a ceramic and is much more expensive to produce. It's able to take extremely high pressures and not break down. It is used for hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells when it is pumped down a well at high pressure it opens up the formation to allow the oil or gas to flow more freely into the well bore. Other chemicals are also used along with a gel which is usually guar and mineral oil to carry the sand into the formation

New to the forum, but have been in frac sand for the last 3+ years. I have been running in OK, DFW and South Texas. I am seeing a lot of this older used equipment just sitting on yards (FlexFrac I-35 near FW, Sandpro in Alice, etc.). In total, hundreds of trucks and trailers sitting idel, yet demand seems to be relatively strong. Can anyone make sense of it?

I don't know what to make of it either. I'm hauling for Sandpro right now and it seems to be Balls to the Wall, or sit for days. They told me it would pick up after the first of the year, and I tend to believe it since there are so many rigs here in South Texas, along with already made wells. Haven't heard good things about FlexFrac, but then you can hear bad stuff about everybody if that is what you want to hear.
