you can but in the end you might make 180-200 after a 600 mile run. ive done it it wasnt fun but i gained experience and i had a job. to make good money its tough to do working for someone else. use the companies like they use you. try to save your capital so that you can then take it and invest in your own equipment and eventually your own business. remember its not what you make but rather what you do with the money you make that will make you wealthy. an old man once told me half a loaf of bread is better than no bread at all and I believe him.

It always amazes me that federal HOS makes drivers invitational travelers under the federal travel system. DOT order 1500.11 provides guidelines for claiming federal allowances thru their employers, after all the drivers daily log is the FMCSA's AT A Glance version of DOT F 1500.3.

I'm reading what some of you drivers are making per mile and I'm stunned. I started out making .18cpm back in 1978. .32cpm 15 years ago and .44cpm just last year. I drive for Pepsi now and make .47cpm along with stop pay ($15 - $20) and hourly ($20.35 ph).
I can't imagine working for .30 something cents per mile, that's 1990's wages. Don't let talk of a bad economy fool you either. Rates have gone up considerably and if you're making less than .40cpm, you're getting screwed.
This is the reason why the trucking industry is so screwed up and will never pay it's drivers (as a whole) what they deserve. People will work for wages that were being paid 20 years ago and be satisfied. We are worth more than .30 something cents per mile. A train engineer sits in a locomotive...on rails, not having to worry about road conditions, weather conditions, etc. and yet he/she makes double or triple the amount of money that the best paying drivers on the road make. We put our lives on the line every day, deal with more asinine regulations than an airline pilot ever has or ever will and yet get paid like a common laborer and a lot of you are satisfied with this?
I've been in the trucking industry for a little over 34 years and hold myself to a higher standard. I'm worth more than .30 something cents per mile and will not work for anybody that pays a ditch digger more money than myself. Those of you who are willing to work for yesterday's wages are what's keeping drivers pay down and keeping these carriers in the " drivers pay scam game". It has nothing to do with being "Union", it's being selective and choosing to work for a trucking company that comes close to what we are worth.
Those of you who choose to continue to work for ...nothing, only feed the fire that burns our wallets and keeps our industry, one of the most dangerous occupations in America, nothing more than a "Labor Mill". We are not laborers, we are professional truck drivers with a skill that most people can't grasp, understand or master, we do. Take pride in our profession and demand the respect and pay that you deserve.

I think it is a little odd that there were some questions not asked, for instance 32 cpm was the STARTING wage for THREE months, with automatic raises at 6 month intervals.

Also of course we cover W/C, we also pay up to 100.00 a sday for breakdown ,After the first day.

We also pay ODOMETER MILES, that's right, no over the dale and thru the woods trips.

We also, DON'T Tarp, NO haz-mat, no waiting at a dock to load or unload, everything we have DRIVES ON AND DRIVES OFF the trailer.

EVERYTHING ties down while STANDING on the ground, no climbing around 12' in the air. No dragging chains around.

ALL my drivers make WELL over 50 G's a year, and run all the miles THEY LEGALLY CAN. No dealing with dock/lumper BS.

They make THERE OWN SCHEDULE on drops and pickup, YOU are driving a truck that ONLY weighs 40,000 to 50,000 MAX down the road.

YOU pick YOUR time off, THIS is as CLOSE to being an O/O WITHOUT the expenses and RISK that you can get.

Sorry, just thought there were some things that should have been asked!!!!

Well Stan, I'm glad you cleared the air here, seem's like 50k a year isnt too bad of money if your getting home when you want to.

My daughter is about fed up with a steady diet of Chi, NYC, Boston, etc at a base of 30 cpm that drizzles out on the longer trips to about 23cpm. She has Hazmat, top scorer on testing, lifelong totally perfect driving record, liquer license, passport, and would love to work for K&B but they want a year on the road and she has only about 6 mos. She has delt successfully with truck problems and wind and weather OK, but the bloom is off the rose for her and wants to move up or at least off the "doggone" Eastern seaboard.

No problem Logan, I just feel that there is alot more to the "Trucker Life" than JUST cpm. If you don't like where you work that extra couple of cpm only goes so far.

The real reason that our guys make what they make is because we are definitely long haul.

Most of our runs are load 2/3 vehicles, drive two or three days, unload and reload and drive another couple of days to unload.

We don't have six or seven drops and pickup a day, sometimes we only have that many a week.

Also most people that have hired on here that wanted to work, don't leave, I have over half of our drivers have been here close to or over 10 years.
