1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

How do I get back after nearly 7 years?

I need to get back to doing what I know. I've driven for a lot of years...20 odd...accident and ticket free.....until one day on my home time I get a DWI in my pickup. The deal is...I don't really drink but once in awhile and this was that bit of time. We all know that alcohol impairs judgement....that's what it did to me. I lived (at the time) tight across the street from a bar. I was out paying bills and running a few errands and on the way home I noticed a friend of mine was at the bar. I hadn't seen him for a good while so I figured I'd swing in and say hi. Well, one beer led to another and when I left I walked out to the pickup. I looked at the house (across the street) and looked at the pickup. I figured....what the heck....I had a few packages in the seat and figured to just take the truck home...(across the street). Needless to say.....I pulled across the street...into my driveway...and had my keys in the door when a policeman pulls up, gets out...and tells me to "Get back in the car." I then proceed to go to jail shortly thereafter.
I'm not making excuses....I did get a DWI...DUI....whatever you want to call it. My license was revoked and ordered to take classes before I could get them back. Driving was my life. That's what I did for a living. At any rate, I had a series of crappy jobs afterwards and it was hard as heck to make enough money to pay my child support and support myself.....with no money left over to put towards the classes. Finally, I do get a job that allows me to save enough. I do the classes....jump through all the hoops and FINALLY get my license back. The problem is it's for a car. Not the CDL. Well, this job has ended and I have a drivers license. Other than paying for school......does anyone have any ideas on how to get back to what I do? Driving? I can't afford school....and can't get any govt. help due to IRS problems...(the "X" left me sitting screwed on that)...so that's out. Suggestions?

How long has it been since your DWI? Have you checked into any of the CDL mills? It might not be the best option, but it could likely get your foot in the door and you're off scott free in a year having proven yourself to be a changed man.

We all must pay for our mistakes. The good thing is...you learned from this and hopefully you'll never make the same mistake again.

I have to agree with the agent.......time over distance, people make mistakes, I diid too! DUI in 1997, I still drink, but I have NEVER EVER sat in the drivers seat again, even if I have had a sip of liquor. When I'm home now I walk to the watering holes in my town, my friends see me, know my job and they end up carting me all over town (it's a small place)......lucky them :biggrin_2559:!

Almost 3 years ago I went to USA truck, fully disclosed my trangression and they had no issue. I did my time and am happy to say I found a good job with a small carrier making good loot! :biggrin_25514: Thanks USIT for the break!

So it's possible.......good luck driver, you will do GREAT!!!!!!! :biggrin_25525:

This July it will be a full 7 years since the license was revoked. It really sucks that I will have to start again on the bottom....I paid my dues a long time ago. But...from a lapse in judgement, I'll have to do it again. Such is life.
I had pulled every trailer there is to pull....heavy haul...pole trailers.....everything except for a dry bulk. I have experience and my preferences are to stay out for extended periods of time. Once I'm in the groove.....I like to ride it out. Hopefully, something will break soon. I NEED to get back.

You can get your CDL without going to school. But you need to study and pass the testing just like any student fresh out of school. There will be some fees, call your dot testing site for answers in your state to how much. There is a world of info on the web, just be readry to verify what they are saying with the DMV. You will need to use or rent a truck for the test too. Once you get your CDLA back, I would go the all the smaller companies in your area (especially any that take student drivers or refresher drivers) and be compeletely up front with them about your history. Knock on doors and let your personality help you land the job. You may need to go with a trainer for a while but alot has changed in the industry in the last seven years. Hours of service, safety and Elogs to name a few. But after you re-prove yourself, you will be just fine. Good luck and keep working on it!

I hadn't thought about renting a truck. That might just work. Appreciate the feedback.

Anytime! Be sure and brush up on that pretrip! Most drivers fail at that point and never get to the manuevers or road test. Head to a local truck stop and ask a trucker if you can practice on his truck. This is one instance where it is better to find a newbie becaused they will understand and give you some pointers! LOL!

Sounds like a plan. I'll definitely include this in my trials. Thanks.

    Typical devorcie.
Woman use marrage as a way to advance themselfs, then when it's no longer convenient for them they drop you and find somthing better.

If she really gave a sh#t about anything she would let you off the alamony and let you get a better job.
Devorce lawyers are reffered to as "the womans vengence committe".
