Any one in the Computer Field looking to go truck driving????

Alot of IT jobs are getting out-sourced to India (helpdesk) and the more manual jobs are getting swamped with candidates. You have to be really good (nerd level) or really educated (B.S. at a real school) for you to make some serious cash. I have been in the IT field for 10 years now. I know I will take a major pay cut with trucking but I will have less stress and less responsibility. Don't forget that most tech jobs have you on call at all times of the day. My blackberry is on me whils I am on vacation and when at the doctor's with the kids. My boss was typing an email while his wife was leterally giving birth. It will be hard to be away from the family but just because you are ohysically there does not mean you are "in touch" with them.

 

I am in IT and have been for almost 20 years. I make very good money but I do not enjoy it anymore. I am looking to get into trucking even though I will take a massive pay cut, money is not everything. Kids are grown and my wife would like to join me on the road. Will I enjoy trucking, I think I would but won't know until I try!

 

Hey Manny.....I was in the computer field for about 10 years and just went and got my CDL. I was working for Intel and got laid off back in 2003....they are still laying off btw. I made decent money there and probably could have gotten another job somewhere else but decided I was sick of the prospect of being laid off all the time and the computer field is now flooded with applicants willing to take less pay to do the same work.
After a few years of driving I'm sure you'll be able to make a comparative wage as well. I started going to college after I left Intel but with what I would have been able to make after 4 years of that I decided to go truckin' for now. Personally I think it was a good move for me and my family and Il'l never go back into the computer field. I was a systems and network engineer and was doing network security when I left Intel. I had two fistfulls of certifications that really don't mean a hill of beans if you can't find the work. Depends where you live too.

I am in the IT field too, but I have given my notice and my last day in my current position is 10/4/2007. I have signed up for driving school with SAGE at a local Community College and start that at night on 10/1/2007. I have had a lot of friends and family tell me that I am crazy for leaving IT and wanting to go trucking. So I promised them that I would continue looking for another IT job while in school. I had 1 outstanding job application that I interviewed for on monday. If they offer me the job, I will probably take it, but the funny thing is both me and my wife kinda hope that they don't so that I can go trucking while still honoring the promise I made.
As others have said, I may go trucking and hate it, but I will never know until I try

 

I'm not quite in the same position as many of you who have posted in this thread. I'm professionally employed as an office worker, and I've been with the same company for 13 years, working 51 hours per week at $35,000 per year. I've always had a love for the open road, so I'm doing quite a bit of research on trucking (the profession itself and various trucking companies). I want to make sure I do as much research as possible before I change careers.

 

Right now I work as a Computer Operator on a mainframe at a large university. We are supposed to be moving towards a Network Operations Center (NOC) environment. But it seems they may be wanting to start fresh with new staff. Out with the old in with the new. I was promised a job with more pay and better benefits, about two months ago when another job was offered to me. So I stayed for the pay and benefits, meanwhile 2 months later still no pay or bennies.
