Hello everyone. I been visiting this site for a few weeks and it is a great resource for information!

I graduated from my CDL class just last week and I'm looking at Tanker and Flatbed work as my preferences. We had a couple of tanker company recruiters visit our class but no flatbed divisions.

I was wondering if there are any companies in the Houston area that haul oilfield pipe and will hire recent CDL grads? It seems most flatbed divisions want two years experience.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I don't know any oilfield companies (don't live in that area) just so you know. Though, are you looking at start companies like TMC, Maverick, Roehl, etc? Or you looking at more dedicated companies to that field? Because if you need 2 years of experience then a start company would be the best bet. I don't know your home situation and having to drive OTR so alittle more insight might help.

By the way, gratz on taking the first step! The road is a great place.

Thanks. And thanks for the quick reply.

I'm trying to avoid OTR but I realize it may be part of the dues paying process. Being home one weekend a month isn't something that will make me or the wife happy. I'm currently an EMT so working overnights 3 or 4 nights a week isn't an issue but being gone two, three or four weeks would be. That's why I have interest in oilfield pipe. I'm hoping there would be a good amount of regional runs with the chance to do a little long-distance mixed in. I was thinking Houston might be a great location for this type of work.

Congrats on getting your CDL.. I'm in the same boat as you. I just completed CDL class last week and I'm wanting to pull flatbeds, too. Good Luck to You.. I hope you have better luck than I have had for finding a company. I live to far west of I-35 in TX(so most of the flatbed companies have told me) Being that you are in the Houston area... I bet you can find a company without much trouble.

Go for a ride down I-10 from Houston to San Antonio or south of there on 59 or 35 or 281. I bet I saw 15 signs for companies hiring drivers. I have no idea what the requirements would be for experience but it seems like there are ALOT of jobs available for drivers pulling tankers mostly. I want to say one was Sun Resources?? Maybe, sorry, just noticed there were a ton of signs but don't pay alot of attention to who had them up. I live in the Houston area but I do my own thing with a reefer so I don't know much on the flat or tanker side. I did pull a cryo tanker for a while - couldn't handle the sitting around at the job sites. I think I saw something about Halliburton or Schlumberger hiring trainiees but I may be mistaken. Good luck to you - if I head that way this week I'll try to pay more attention and maybe get some names for you.

Thanks! I'll do some driving this week and see what I can find out.

I have, but I haven't seen anything about companies hauling pipe around Houston that will hire rookies. I've read alot about Frac hiring in Texas but I do worry about being assigned to a bobtail and not doing much driving. I'm in the very early stages of learning to drive a TT and I hate to see those skills fade with time.

Didn't really go to the hot oilfield areas this week but I did see another sign for Sun Coast Resources. May want to check them out.

W.M. Dewey has always been my idea of an entry-level pipe hauling outfit around Houston. Their website states that you need one year, but they might make an exception and take a chance on training you.

I think the key to getting that done is to walk in with a good attitude - don't try to apply online or over the phone. Go into the office and try to impress them. Even if they don't hire you to drive right away, they might can find a place for you working in one of the pipe yards until they feel comfortable giving you the opportunity to drive.

Thanks. They are a tanker company and tanker is something that I am also considering. I checked them out but they haul fuel and require a couple of years experience.

Thanks for the info and link. I hadn't heard of this company before but I will check them out.
