Trucker remains critical after Asheville wreck

ASHEVILLE A truck driver rescued in dramatic fashion from a weekend accident scene has a long road to recovery, but family members say they are thankful his life was saved. Glenn Wooten, 54, remained in critical condition Sunday at Mission Hospital following the Saturday morning wreck on Interstate 40 in Asheville, a Mission spokesperson said.

Doctors had to perform a roadside amputation of his leg to free him from the wreckage. Michael Wooten credited his brothers survival to the dedication of emergency personnel and Mission doctors on the scene. Everybody in the family is just so grateful for the skill and fortitude of the rescue people and the trauma surgeons on the site, Michael Wooten said Sunday afternoon. They saved his life.

Trucker injured in Asheville wreck dies

ASHEVILLE A truck driver trapped for hours after crashing down an Interstate 40 embankment over the weekend and freed only after a doctor amputated his leg at the scene died early Wednesday. Glenn Wooten, 54, died while in intensive care at Mission Hospital, despite what had been hopeful signs that he might recover.

It was a shock to us, Wootens brother, Michael Wooten, said. He just took a turn down.

You don't hear many stories of hospitals like that. They truly made every effort possible to save the man. My condolences go out to the Wooten family. RIP driver!
