You would need to have a good staff to keep the equipment clean and working properly. No one wants to use something after a nasty sweaty truck driver. Also no truck driver wants to get all sweaty with out being able to take a shower. I think if you need offered free showers after a good work out. AS well as offer a jacuzzi and sauna then charge a reasonable monthly rate. You have your work cut out for you, and are takeing a great risk but something must be done. I was sitting in truckstop last nite looking at the nasty buffet realizing i am killing myself so i refuse to eat the buffet, i ordered a chef salad only to wait forty minutes for my food. I looked around only to see every one eating the buffet. I then realized that there was huge amount of people in this facility that very obease. Including me,we all want something that can sattisfy us after a long day of work. Eating healthy and exercise is not satisfactory for our cravings. In order to make a gym exciting and look forward to going to it the gym must have something we all want. Find the answer and you will be sucessful. Don't find the answer it will be a complete failure, something that came and went.

    kschanaman,

I had the exact same idea and I think I have a way to make it work, but like you I lack the funds to ty it. It would also be more beneficial to have on location starting out. Send me an email and we can discuss this.

    Hello kschanaman,

I have not yet started by truck driving career but plan to do so within the next three months and staying shape on the road is one of my major concerns. I have a pretty nice home gym set up and a p/t night job loading trailers at FedEx and have worked hard to be in the best shape of my life.

I think your idea is a GREAT one! I think it would be great if small gyms could be integrated INTO some truck stops. I guess that none of the TS chains offer any?

I would suggest looking for backing from those who would benefit the most from the Gyms. The trucking companies, a physically fit and mentally alert driver is worth much more to them then someone who is out of shape.

Use it? Hell yes I'd use them! Easy to get to, in/out of and convenient I'd be there a MINIMUM of 3 times a week and usually more.

I'm glad to see someone who has the same concern as I do. I support you 100%! Please let me know how it progresses & thank you for bringing this issue up!

ps: All I use is a stairmaster I bought from my old gym, a Bowflex XTL and a Nautilus selectech dumbbell set. Everything fits in a tiny bedroom of my house & I still have enough room to comfortably use it as my home office.

has anyone brought a set on the road? I think the stand would have to stay home but the units themselves are pretty small.

Does anyone bring a motorized scooter with them for local transportation? If so how does that work out?

I think we had this conversation on another post somewhere here already.
Anyway, I think fitness centers at truckstiops would be awesome. Personally I find it troubling not having access to a gym on the road. Matter of fact I have avoided going back over the road for mostly that reason. I have now taken a local job that allows me to go to the gym every day.
I know at one time there were fitness centers located sporadically at truckstops around the country but equipment gets torn up or stolen etc.
I think it could work but it would have to be a membership thing where the driver pays a fee comparable to other non truckstop fitness centers, giving access only to that member.
To me. if drivers have to pay for a membership, it will bring in more responsible people. Too bad the over the road trucking companys don't offer some type of incentive like a truckstop gym membership to keep their drivers in better shape.
I have found that when I'm in good shape I feel better and more productive behind the wheel even though it's not a physically demanding task. It's the mindset. I also noticed I sleep better as well.:yes2557:

I would love to see a fitness center in truck stops! That work out not only gives you a good rest, you feel better in many ways!

If I ever win the lotto, I will open up a chain of fitness centers at as many truck stops as I can. Unless someone wants to loan me the money,LOL:biggrin_25523:

I would be all for a gym but I don't think it will happen. I think you will have to find your own alternatives to stay in shape. Make sure you eat right while you are out, do your own personal workout with push-ups, sit-ups, etc... (I know this won't make you the biggest strongest person out there but it will keep you in shape). If you still want to gain some muscle then possible go out and buy some dumbbells of your own. (Only if you can safely store them in your truck somehow). If it was available I would use the gym instead of what I mentioned.

My wife and I are thinking of becoming truckers. I'm a part time personal trainer now and worry about not being able to exerciseon the road.I have thought about powerblocks on the truck? Not real sure how all this works yet. Having fitness centers close to truck stops sounds pretty good to me!I enjoy personal training but does'nt pay very well here in our little town in mid-missouri. Looking at using body weight as resistence and try to get in some cardio somewhere. Like I said we are not truckers yet so I have no idea, but I am very concernd about it. Please any suggestions would be appreciated
