It's all about opportunity. Prime DOES have a class that you can take advantage of to learn how to run your business properly. They also send you out with a trainer (who is a successful L/O) for one on one training and 'hands on' learning. What other business can you start that has this much support with no initial capital investment? I don't know of any. With classroom and hands-on training, loads available and dispatched to you, and cash advances available for the unexpected, you have all the tools you need to be successful. Whether you know how to use them, or even choose to use them is up to you. It's not Prime's job to hold your hand - if you want or need that, then they have the company driver slots that you can fill.

    P. T. Barnum had a famous quote to cover this.

Again, the Prime lease program may appear to be skewed in Prime's favor. BUT I say that the program also gets you started in your own relatively low risk business with no capital outlay up front, and no debt. They provide training, support, cash advances if you need it, fuel discounts, maintenance reserves (with paid interest) and much more. The program enables you to own and run your own business where most would otherwise be unable to do so.

Would I take advantage of their lease program? Probably not. But then again, I wouldn't be keen on starting up any type of trucking business in this economic climate.

You cant earn a consistent check doing a lease purchase and you will most likely go bankrupt, truck drivers have to be smarter or the ripoffs will continue.

How is it a ripoff? Grown folks sign these high risk deals of their own free will. It can be a bad deal, but Prime gives you what they say they will: A truck and a weekly payment due.

And few if ANY even know let alone have a PROFIT AND LOSS STATMENT! I'd also bet that most had know idea what the cost per mile was, how can you run a truck like that?
Just cause you can do a job dosn't make you capable of running a biz profitable

You are not running a business by renting a truck from Prime I don't care what they are telling you !

Having them tell you how they want you to run it wont make you a businessman any more than sleeping in the garage will make you a car.

There is just one way to become an owner operator and that is by BUYING a truck NOT renting one from the company .

The only reason these companies came up with this lease operator idea is because they know that nobody wants to wait and earn anything ! Everyone thinks that just because they want it that they deserve it.

It is just more of I want so I should have it right now and I somebody should give it to me mentality that has ruined this country.

Because the only guarantee is a truck and a weekly payment, there are no guarantee on miles so the company dictates whether you starve or make a paycheck. Its pure stupidity unless there is a stipulation in the contract with a mileage guarantee.

Prime's contracts all contain a revenue guarantee. The current one is a minimum of $1.02 per mile in linehaul revenue averaged over every 100,000 dispatched miles, plus fuel surcharge.

I did forget to mention that benefit. It's something to consider, but one also needs to consider that the cost of running the truck is somewhere around $1.25/mile, depending on miles driven compared to fixed and fuel costs. So you'd need the fuel surcharge to kick in just to break even, assuming that you don't earn more than the revenue guarantee states.

It's not for everyone, and it's more math than I'm interested in doing in the near future :)
