Could be from a thrust washer from one of the front gears
-
Thanks but I no its not from their cause we had all the gears off to seal the cover up

It's a good possibility that it could be from the thrust bearings for the crankshaft. I've also seen it come from the bearings in the oil pump.

I agree with kustom. When we took off the oil pan on our 3406C PEEC to replace the rear main seal, we noticed the trust washers were worn on the crankshaft. When we purchased the truck I was cutting up the oil filter to see what was inside it cause I didn't know any history on the engine and there was quite a bit of brass flakes in there. I was concerned too that it was wrist pin bushings going bad but it was just the thrust washers. I ended up putting in new thrust washers and new rod and main bearings while I was in there. Just my .02

Thanks but we pulled the thrust down and it wasnt worn. The piece off brass to matched up to the wrist pin contour as well

I and also they weren't flakes they were two pieces of brass I didn't do an oil sample yet but I pulled one today to send it out
