When I worked for UPS, they had the package cars rebuilt. At the hub I was at most the cars were late 70's with a few mid 90's diesels mixed in. When the motor finally gave out, they sent them to a place in Indy where they ripped out the mechanicals, put in new and repainted them. Came back about 3 months later looking brand new. Here lately tho I've been seeing the brand new one's running around. I bet they do take the old, worn out one's and send them down to central america. Who wants to get bullet holes in a brand new package truck?? :biggrin_2554:

I've been in a shop that was doing rebuild work for UPS (package cars) and as you said - they were comprehensive rebuilds. Like a brand new truck when all was said and done.

I'd have to wonder what value there would be in anything FedEx or UPS didn't have any use for anymore as they seem to squeeze every bit of value from their fleets they can.

I drove a rebuilt Astro 95 that was assigned to the UPS center in Rhinelander, WI back around 1988/1989.

Everything was new (including the cab) or rebuilt except the frame rails, brackets and fuel tanks. They used to do these rebuilds on a time/mileage basis.

Today they would buy a new truck rather than rebuild but their maintenance program is still amazing.

FedEx freight destroys their trailers but sells their tractors. Was told by my dispatcher that I would have to but minimum of 100 though lol

I drove a heavy wrecker for a dismantler in the northeast. We bought all of UPS vehicles from Connecticut, southeastern NY, NYC, Long Island and northeast New Jersey. We had to take pictures of them being crushed. We exported all drive line components and the cabs and hoods from the tractors. The package car bodies had to be destroyed. The tires and rims all had to be returned to UPS. They had a formula for determining when to scrap a unit. Once the mileage was over a certain point and the cost of repairs was over $3500 it had to be destroyed. Don't know why they wanted the package car bodies destroyed but that what they wanted.

I don’t know about now, but about 5 years ago the local scrap yard had a UPS contract. They were scrapping trucks and trailers, all of which looked like good equipment. They were actually driven to the scrap yard, and everything I saw had almost new tires. There was a UPS rep on site, witnessing the destruction of everything, even making sure the tires had big enough holes in them to not be repaired. You couldn’t take so much as a bolt off of one of them.

It was the most wasteful thing I ever saw, perfectly good trucks and trailers being shredded. I just don’t understand a business model where this would be a wise thing to do.

I’ve heard tell that it used to be because of their contact with Mack. Mack agreed to sell them trucks at a heck of a deal, so long as UPS destroyed the trucks when they got done with them, to keep from flooding the market with used trucks. I don’t know how true this is.

When I worked for FedEx Freight a company out of OK auctioned them. I think they all went south of the border for the most part. They stopped selling trailers because they had to put all new tires on them so they were losing $1,500 on each one so they started scrapping them and making more.
