I see one a lot actually. haha. Its in our Claas 940 Chopper. They use this engine in the 940,950,and 960 choppers. The smaller 930 gets an inline 6. The Larger 970 and 980 used to get two inline 6 engines side by side hooked together with a belt and able to run independently using 1 engine for low power applications and running both when full power was needed. The 980 had 860hp. Krone used the same setup on their big X850 but used a smaller and larger engine, Krones Big X 1000 had 1024hp and used same size inline six engines.

Claas ditched the twin engine setup for MAN Vees. A V8 in the 970 and a V12 in the 980. Its believe the main reason was due to emissions. With the twin engines each had to meet Tier 4 interim. By going to single engines rated over 750hp each they are able to avoid compliance until 2015. The smaller ones are still using Mercedes SCR equipped engines.

We absolutely love this engine. Thing is a horse. Its rated at 472hp in our model and is bi-twin turbo. The OP knows Im sure, but for others reading this thread bi-turbo typically refers to engines having two turbos with only one pressure stage. The turbos are almost always the same size. Where as compound turbos on an ACERT are two turbos with 2 pressure stages with one often being larger than the other.

It's my main arguing point when people say inline engines lug better than V8s. It all depends on the engine, and this engine lugs. It has a max RPM of 2200rpm,idles at 1,200rpm, it is rated at 1800rpm and we typically run it around 1500-1600RPM under full load day in day out. Thats what forage harvesters were built to do. We have had times when a slug will go through and you will watch the RPMs get down into 3 digits while under full load and it will come back and keep running. This is very important. If the engine does not bounce back the machine can become plugged up with forage which means you have to dig it out by hand, downtime on an operation that when running costs 1000 per hour. Fortuneately the Claas doesnt plug easy anyways and out of the 3 times we have killed the engine, we have only had to dig it out by hand once. We didnt get a good number but fuel consumption is in the 20-24 gallons per hour range.

In comparison to our Deere that was an inline 6 rated at 480hp, if it saw 1,600rpm it was done, it would snuff out and the machine would be plugged.

Now alot of this has to do with the way the rest of the machine is designed, but we still are very impressed with that engine, aside from the frequent valve adjustments (400hr intervals). Life expectamy of a forage harvester is only 5,000-6,000hrs because of the way they are run. Its full load all the time.

Here is a video of us screwing around, this isn't full load, or how we normally chop. Just some stress relief. Only video I have of ours running. There are many more of other ones on youtube though.

Engine OM502LA 650HP, but really Euro-3, single turbo.

As I can see OM501 and OM502 on highway versions are used in cabovers only. Seems to me all trucks of conventional design are not ready for exaust on driver's side and V-designed compressor located on rear end of engine would'd be acceseble to maintane and fix becouse of cabin that cant be tilt

The one that we have is Tier III in us, and is Euro IIIA.

The new ones are Tier IV interim in us, and Euro IIIB.

Both standards are very close in their standards.

The earlier series used to use a big single on the 900 (the big power one). Those were Euro II, Tier II engines
