hi I have a question about what do you do in regards to your CDL if you move to another state. I was thinking of moving to California from NC next year. I was wondering if I would just fill out paperwork with the CA DMV and just simply have my CDL transfered or is it more complicated than that. Would I have to retest on the road and writen exam in CA? Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks:biggrin_25514:

My only experience with changing the issuing state since getting my CDL was right after school. I went to a CDL school in Missouri, but lived in Illinois. When I finally transfered them from MO to IL, all I had to do was retake the written tests, including those for any and all endorsements. I'm not sure if this is a standard course of action with all states or not. I'd check CA's motor vehicle department's website for more info.

I just recently changed mine from FL to NC .... the only thing that I had to do was show a current DOT physical card and take the hazmat test .... other than that they just wanted their #### $200 for 8 years

I just love the Comunistic State of California. :biggrin_25520:
They love their stuff, but hate our trucks.

Ok, you will have to retake your Written GK test, I am not sure how much that's going to cost.
No you will not need to take another road test.
You will have to pay $94 total though.
Your best bet... Keep an address in your current state for your CDL.

Here in ID, I have to take the GK written $3
And for the license, it's a fee of $28.50 for four years.
    Total $31.50

Aside from that you could call the CA DMV, or DLB to be on the safe side.

Call 1-800-777-0133 and Use Your Phone to:
    • make vehicle registration or driver license appointments (driving test appointments made during normal business hours only).
    • find out the types of services conducted in various DMV offices, business hours, locations and directions.
    • request DMV forms, handbooks and Fast Facts and How-To brochures be mailed to you.
    • listen to answers to frequently asked questions.
    • Get general information about vehicle registration and driver licensing requirements.

When I transferred my to Kentucky it was easy as could be. All I did was go to the regular DMV. I handed them my out of state CDL, and my medical card. They phoned the KY DOT, took my picture. Nothing to it. Well transferring them to Kentucky there was nothing to it atleast.

What school in MO? I went To MTC.
I waited before I changed mine over though, because I didn't know how long I was going to live in CO. I transferred them back to Kentucky the day I came back home:)
