On a Greyhound somewhere on 80 west of Chicago headed to Olathe, KS. for orientation with Trans-Am. Any one else starting with TA this week? Just got my CDL in December I'm letting TA pop
my truck driving cherry.
Trans-Am the saga starts.

Still on the Greyhound, about 10 min ETA to Kansas City, MO. met a few guys on the bus who're headed to TA as well. The question in my head at the moment is to lease or not to lease...
-
DO NOT LEASE! Get a feel for the job first.
tdcanterbury67 Thanks this. -
TOTALLY agree ... DO NOT LEASE!! At least not yet... It is a HUGE commitment that if it doesn't go well will bury you in debt for a VERY long time!! Really hard also as a solo... My husband and I team and lease... Everything goes in one pot, so that helps... But we still HAVE to keep the wheels rolling... Home time?? Not if you want to pay off bills and make any money! That truck will cost you rolling or standing still... Thankfully our daughter is grown now and the only thing (and it's a biggy) that we are missing at home family wise is our grandson growing up
richsotr and DrtyDiesel Thank this. -
If orientation is at the main terminal, talk to TA drivers that will be coming and going.

You will have 3 easy days of classroom. No physical test and the road test is nothing, its just to see you can drive around a loop for now no skills testing or anything. You will get on a trainer truck for 3 weeks. Not saying it will be bad but usually this is the hardest part being with someone you have no idea about. Just remember its just to get to the end goal if you have some difficulty. My first trainer was a jackazz for 2 weeks, he had to go on med leave, thank God. My second trainer for a week was so cool we had a blast for the 3rd week. If he yells at you dont worry your just scaring the hell out of him.

Thank you gents, they make leasing sound tempting, but I'm sticking to my guns about being a company driver. Motel is nice, breakfast is nice I'm waiting for the catch. Class room this morning is just paper work taking my road test in a minute.
-
When you are finished training,
hopefully they will have a company truck for you.
That is when they push towards the lease.........
buyer beware !!
Good Luck !!

You might hear "no company trucks available for awhile". Go home and we'll call you or lease a truck right now !

I live 22 miles from the Olathe terminal(all you people in upstate Maine and southern Florida eat your heart out). Back in the early 90's I would have driven for them, not now. Matter of fact, every time I drove past the terminal, I say to my self, "Self, I have my own assigned company truck, I'm running solo, and the trailer is loaded... so hmm, glad I don't work for them.
