Fiery Wreck Worsens I-85 Traffic Jam
9/28/07
As motorists waited out a traffic jam caused by a tractor trailer wreck on I-85 northbound in Coweta County Friday, another big rig burst into flames in a wreck in the southbound lanes.
The two accidents backed up traffic for miles in both directions of the interstate.
According to the Georgia DOT, the initial accident happened when a tractor trailer hit a barrier wall and spilled diesel fuel and oil onto the northbound lanes of I-85 about 9:30 a.m. The cleanup brought northbound traffic to a standstill for hours in Coweta County. Police rerouted traffic off I-85 onto U.S. 29 to ease the backup.
Some motorists stopped their engines, exited their vehicles and used lawn chairs to sit out the wait on the side of the interstate.
