What do you guys think about putting an APU on older trucks? I was thinking about installing them in my 6 truck fleet, but my trucks range from 96 - 01. I'm wondering if its worth the $10k per truck.

The worth is up to you.
I would say if your guys idle a lot, then yes.
I dont think that the age of the truck has much to do with it, and you can always remove them and put them onto newer trucks as the need arises.

I would go with Thermo King Tri-Pacs. My company was using Rig Master and switched to Thermo King because of RM units breaking down all the time. Very little downtime now.

Forgot to add, there are also a few companies out there now selling and installing "reman" Tripac's. I know of one place in Springfield,Mo that sells and installs used units, but offers no warranty.
Figured it may be cost viable to get used vs new.

This is the place I have seen on Ebay etc.

Putting an APU on my Pete was one of the better investments I've made. Just MAKE DARN SURE if you buy used, you buy from a reputable dealer/installer. That's where I made my mistake.

Gears, you made a mistake?

I know...hard to believe right?

I installed a APU (proheat) back when it wasn't so popular on my 01.
The savings in fuel and extended oil changes will pay for the unit, but the real savings is in the over all lower cost of maintenance.
In 840K miles I've only changed belts once, 1 alt, 1 water pump and that didn't need it when I did it, 1 AC compressor and just did the injectors 15K miles ago on a N14.
I just turned 10,000 hrs and owned it for 7 yrs... that is 10,000 running hours I do not have on my engine or transmission.
If the APU were to blow up tomorrow, I wouldn't hesitate to go buy another one in a NY minute.
If you do decide to go this route... do everyone a favor and route the exhaust along the frame to the rear of the truck for two reasons... noise & exhaust fumes.DrtyDiesel Thanks this. -
We put Dynasys APU's on our 4 trucks last summer. Made in the USA, great support and they work fantastic! Company has only been producing them 2 years or so, so the dealer network isn't great yet but they are easy to self-service. We leased them on 3 year leases, no down payment and a next to nothing buyout at the end of the lease. Biggest reason I gave them a shot over TriPaks was they were $8,500 installed, new with warranty. So for $300 a month lease and $200 a month in fuel, we're saving we're saving $300 to $400 a month in idling fuel expense. Our solo drivers love them.
