I couldn't imagine us trying to go it on our own in the brokerage business. I can tell you we likely wouldn't have the customers we have if it weren't for the financial security of who we're contracted with. They just won't put up with some cut rate jokers who fly by night and float cash around.

Sure you can! An ex Cali cop with less than 5 years as a trucker did it! Some out of work bozo that just watched the "How to be a broker" video on youtube is gonna do it! Just watch a few webinars then tell every one how you set in on some high level meetings.
Better hurry, at the moment there all most as many brokers as trucking carriers, in a few more years there will be more brokers than truckers! :biggrin_25523:

Honestly, I never expected such a quick and positive response to my moving on to my own brokerage. I am in a niche and specialized market which changes the rules a bit, I suppose. I have fantastic shippers, but again, it seems from all my time in the industry, and research, that bulk in a very different animal from van work. I give you guys major credit.

Those webinars are a riot! I love the dude in his trailer with his webcam. My husband is a record producer and has a line of tutorials out to teach how to utilize a lot of the technology out there for producers/engineers. I showed him the broker-guy, we cracked up. My husband could have saved a lot of time and money on video editing equipment if he did it that way!

I have about 25 brokers in my computer that I have done business with. I use the top 5 for most of my loads, but I have always gotten paid for everything. Sometimes I have to follow up with a phone call if a payment is late, because I have had brokers say they lost it, or didn't know when to pay it.

Thanks to all for the responses...

Before using a broker, what sources do you use when performing your due diligence to check on their 'rating'(if applicable), time in business and their bond for example?...And what are you specifically looking for(i.e. what I mentioned or other more important things)?...

Checking credit references in an exercise in futility for the most part. When you apply for business credit do you list the guy you screwed or the guy you are currently paying? If I see someone listed as a credit reference that I know I will call them, that's about the only exception.

I call and check their bond. Is it valid. Are there claims against it? When was the last claim against it?

We use rts credit and if it's a large amount and it's not someone that has broker authority then we use cortera like freight a forwarder or small direct shipper . New business ,new mc# we require 50% after freight is loaded.. Bal at delivery.....

We run an mc # and it's. A year old then we look what are the avg days to pay payment trend ect....if they are rated a D and there 45 + days out on payment then we either change the terms to protect us or we move on to another load.....

My factor has free credit checks and I use them. Prior to factoring I used the credit score on ITS - anything over 30 days to pay or less than A credit then I wouldn't haul for them UNLESS I knew them from my prior employment OR they were willing to pay advance when loaded and balance on delivery by comcheck. I work WAY too hard to not get paid by some dirt bag.

You have to watch its credit scoring we have called them on it It does not get updated regularly due to the info off of the factoring/ time....
