You really don't have much of a say off the bat. You tell driver services what you would like, they might try to get you a good match. Often the mentors will be in the back of the orientation room looking all of you over and try to pick who they want. The ball switches to your court when after a couple of days you decide if you can deal with your mentor or not. You do NOT have to put up with abuse of any kind. But you need to be mature enough to be able to put up with constructive criticism and to be able to recognize it as that.

the first time your mentor screams at you for ANY reason..unless your about to drive over a cliff or hit something or acts unprofessional by calling you names or continually asking if your stupid, making fun of you for calling your wife and kids, ...or if he just flat refuses to answer questions because he beleives that all questions are stupid and you will earn what you need to know by just watching..or a myraid of other things...request to get a new one..I would not reccomend sitting in the truck for 2 weeks with them till you get to the point where your gonna drag thier sorry ### out of the truck and knock thier teeth out...just my opinion, i guess some people learn well in that kind of invironment..so each to thier own I guess..lol

I think I could be an awsomely cool mentor, as long as I didn't have a student.

Your last post was many moons ago and you are still a "wannabe" on your profile? I hope all went well and you have just been too busy making "sheets of money" to do any more posts.

As I live 80 miles NW of PX. I am trying to decide between Knight or Swift to train under in PX AZ. if I can't get any financial assistance to go to Yuma Truck Driving school. And even than I would have to pick a company after that. Finding a lot of good food for thought on these forms. Also learning a lot from trucker videos on you tube.
