I seriously doubt that anyone in their right mind would drop 15k on something that will kill their fuel economy (the single largest variable in the trucking business) and cause such a loss of power. I may be wrong, someone may pipe up and say "I did it." But if that happens, I'm certain you will not hear them say, "I think it was a good decision."

I wouldn't bother, only because the future of trucking is Liquid Natural Gas. By the time your retrofit has paid for itself, you'll need an LNG truck for Cali.

i heard the news on the LNG trucks. and i really wasn't impressed with the numbers.
the gas may cost half as much. but the mileage is also cut in half. you're still burning the same cash in gas. and when the LNGs get more popular. you know that price is going to go up. which means actually burning MORE cash in gas compared to a diesel.
unless i'm missing something. i just don't see LNG being worth it.
as for the emissions. i would think that instead of using an EGR to recirculate the engine blow by. they would go back to using the vent tube method but with a catalyst. and the old fashioned technology that cars once used called a SMOG PUMP to pump air into that catalyst. and even the exhuast system.
that's bound to clean up the air from the engine. get the gas mileage back to where it once was. and we wouldn't be faced with EGR replacements.
with the new aerodynamic trucks. i bet mileage would be in the high 8's. -
The best thing about LNG is you can run it in your A-C system as a refrigerant!

If Trucker's would protest the communist state of CA and not go in period eventually when they run out of stuff they will change the laws or start shipping it from Mexico either way no more CA DOT Bullcrap
-
It's really not the DOT in CA, it's CARB. I really don't think the guys at the scales or CHP in Cali are any worse than anywhere else.
Besides, at a certain rate many people will do what is required to run in that state. I am one. It's about money - if the money is right then I'll buy a new truck or retrofit an old one or whatever. -
it is about money and i for one will not spend the money just so i can go to ca.... the dpf system are more prone to breakdown = more money... the loads don't pay (dry van) that well anyway...... same reason i don't do fl..... i turn down 6-8 loads a year going to ca (just don't want to go there anyway)so for me i would need to get a extra $1000 a load just to pay for the upgrade in 2 years (if it didn't breakdown at all) so for me the money just not their.....

carb is california.
and dot is pretty picky themselves. roll through there state with a dirty truck and you're just asking for a level 1.
i rolled in with a fuel tanker that had dirt on the caps. the receiver guys asked how i got past the scales. cuz the scales woulda put me outta service for having dirt on them caps.
you gotta remember, cali is bankrupt. they want money any way they can. -
I was around when the STATE made all Ma and Pa gas stations retro fit there Tanks! many went out on a limb Financially to comply AND WHAT HAPPENED??!! the STATE declared tanks they installed 2 yrs before as obsolete AND Mandatory new tanks to be installed??? well that finished off Ma and Pa.... The STATE will do the same thing here just after U retro fit a DPF .... if i had to make a choice I would wait it out till last minute !! cause the BUGS just aint worked out of the system yet..... IT TOOK AUTO industry 20 yrs to get bugs out of smog cars .... go buy a car from 74 to 92 and try to smog it in calif ....forget it
BigBadBill Thanks this.
