Man there doesn't seem to be alot of Shaffer drivers on this forum. I'm hoping that that means they are busy running and don't have time for message boards. :D

I will be in orientation on the 20th of this month. They are renting a car for me to drive from Ct to Pa...pretty cool. I'm really glad to not be going on a bus. I hate riding buses.

I am really wondering what my starting pay will be. I'm worried that it will be too low and I will have to back out of the deal.

I'm also nervous about running in NYC. I've been there a couple of times and I didn't like it. I got lost the 2nd time and had to call a driver that I knew that lived there and he talked me out of the city turn by turn.

Anywho...just rambling here and wishing that there was more Shaffer specific info on here.

So I nearly got all of my stuff packed and ready to go. I forgot how much stuff I have that I like to have with me in the truck. They said pack for two weeks but I am planning on staying our for at least three weeks right off the bat. I still need a CB so I will either stop and get one on the way to the orientation or possibly get one while I'm there at one of the truck stops that are nearby the hotel.

What would you like to know, been doing the Shaffer thing since last Aug.

On the Shaffer side of things

    Miles are low
Best week was 3280, avg is about 1600-1800 right now.
You have to wait longer most of the time at your pick ups
    Unloads can be longer
When your reeffer goes bad, thats another problem, and you hope you do not lose that $50,000 load
Just had a 31.5 hr detention in Ft. Worth TX
Had my share of 200 mile runs and 3 days to get there, then 8 hrs to unload
A lot of people bail from the Shaffer side for all of the above reason's
And if you weigh more than 150 pounds, the sleep test! LOL

    brighter side of things

my pick up points seem to be better than dry side
get to see more of the country-side (more back road driving)
    no-NYC driving yet!
Just got assigned a driver Mgr (and thats why I am still on the Shaffer side, waiting to see if it is really going to change)

Thanks for the response. I am in the hotel at orientation right now. I went through the driving test and physical today. They sent 2 people home out of 7 of us. I have a feeling that one other guy might be getting sent home tomorrow because of work history problems. I haven't heard anything about sleep testing yet and I hope I don't either. I saw the "sleep lab" they got set up there. It's just a trailer they converted.

I hope I get more miles than 1600-1800. That's not enough miles for me to stay out 3-4 weeks at a time away from home and all that is familiar. I'll be one of the ones jumping ship if that is the case. I have been wondering if there are ways to make money out of the sitting time when running reefer. Do you know if they pay you for unloading and how much? I guess I can find out tomorrow. Not looking forward to all the sitting and thinking I made a mistake going reefer. Only time will tell though.

I'm hoping I get a decent truck that's not more than 3 years old or so. I see they have some what look like '07 trucks sitting around in the terminal here. I'll be dissapointed is I get one of those.

Well thats about right for sending people home.

On the sleep lab study, if your neck is larger than 17 and you snore and weigh more than 150 you may be hosed.

On the trks I was issued a 1.5 yr old trk with 189,000 on it.

Miles, the first 3 mths I worked was great, then--- they started to go down, I have herd that frm a lot of people, the higher per mile rate you make the lower the miles, the less you make per mile the more miles you will run.

From what I have seen so far, they have a very hard time keeping people on the reefer side.

You will not get paid to unload your trailer and if they do it will be about 1/3 to 1/2 half what they pay a lumper service.

I am going to hang in there for a few more mths to see if it is going to change, if it does not, I'll jump frm reefers, to much stuff to worry about, and the pay is not right based on the miles in my book and all the wait time, but in most case,s you can get some pay for the wait time.

Any questions feel free to ask.

I will start to post miles this week and try to keep this updated.

Heres some more stuff for ya to chew on.

Theres more than 100 reefer trls setting at Lenoir term not being used since Dec, thats 2.8 million dollars not making any money.

When I received my 90 day review 5 months into the job, I found out I will never make the monthly miles to make a pay raise, that did not set well with me.

I was told that on the reefer side 2100 miles is that fleet avg, I was told I should be 2500-3000 a week.

I have run into some drivers that are happy with what they are doing, and run into many more that wished they went dry side.

Also ran into some drivers that haven't had a raise for up to 8 yrs, and now the new drivers coming ing with exp are being paid more than they are.

The Co. is not the worst but they are not the best.

Just a quick update...I got my truck on Friday and am in Marietta broke down. It is partly my fault. I'm on my phone so I'm not going into detail. I had to do the sleep study and I have the cpap machine. Three people quit while I was at the New Kingstown terminal because of the sleep test. Will update when I get somewhere with internet.

There is a computer down stairs by the main desk you can use to get on line.

On the sleep study I have been told that they are going to try to give it to all or most of the new drivers coming on board, as part of the phy testing.

What was the cost of the unit to you?, and how much are they going to take out of your pay check each week for how long, and did any one that took the sleep study, not need one?

Post the model # I want to look it up on line?

i did well there in 06, Would stay out 24+ days do !0k-11k miles a month. Would be there still if i had not of gotten fired. Oh yea every time you drive more than 3500 miles in 7 days, you get a random..... i did 7, after awhile i knew when it was time before it was time. Made 50K in 11 months 1 week.

PS don't call the Safety Guy "wisker bisquit" he hates that..... and it won't help your situation
