Oil demand is at a 15 year LOW right now. Nothing to do with the high prices.

2Q09 was at 84.2 million barrels per day and 4Q11 was at 89.3.

The highest year ave before this was 86.2 in 2007.

I can only find reliable data going back 14 years but in '97 we had 73.4 and didn't hit 80 until '04.

2011 was the highest demand in history.

Ok i started this thread on getting opinions on what my fellow O/O were going to do..I didnt want this thread hijacked with a bunch of BS... I just as my fellow O/O are doing the best we can and trying to make a decent living thats in the profit side not loss.. I even had to scale back my Racing Side of business because of fuel prices not only for my Race hauler but for the Race cars too.. i cant pay myself a fuel surcharge as this is my hobby but yes i did have to raise my FSC rate for a couple of brokers i use and companies..not to much grumbling on their part as its just the cost of doing business.. We survived the 07 to 09 rising fuel prices and im sure we will again.. Just that this time around we might see less available loads because big companies may haul them cheaper..Just my thoughts..

You're talking World demand. I thought you meant US demand, which is around 1997 levels, low.

You're talking about a commodity sold around the world. US consumption could drop 20-30% over the next few years and the price still wouldn't go down if world demand picked up that slack, or continued to rise.

    Road Warrior,

Lack of racing is making you pessimistic. But I can see certain carriers having to take cheaper freight as they are losing accounts. Target announced that they disqualified several carriers because of safety "issues" resulting in higher than expected transportation cost in some markets. If you are one of those carriers that hauled 50 loads a week you are looking to fill capacity.

The next 3-5 years are going to be interesting in our industry. Between CARB, CSA and new regulations we can find ourselves (O/O and small carriers) in a position that makes it hard to keep up with the other additional costs of running a truck.

I agree Bill. Its also hard to try and predict things right now as the price of fuel is going up, we have had a mild winter this year so more freight has been moved and (if you havent heard already)we are about to see Montana and South Dakota go boomtown just like North Dakota did for oil.

To road warrior, something I did already was change freight lanes and have voided California off my radar unless paying round trip. I wont go there after 2014 (thanks to CARB) anyway but they really put a shank into my business with the brand new drayage law. oh well! I am trying to figure out whats going to be left after the cheap freight mega haulers are done.

Do your best to promote "no hauling of cheap freight" and educate everyone you can about how that screws everyone.

Trust me gang if i could cut Cali out of my picture i would but i live out here in the west and 2 of my biggest produce contracts are out of Cali.. Yeah Bill lack of racing is making me Crazy...lol... I had to cut Georgia off my list for this coming weekend due to rising fuel prices for both the hauler and race car i just cut back... i just bought a new kw thats Carb legal and a New Reefer trailer with the New Gen 2 thermo King.. I understand what your Saying MommasMoneyMaker i wish it was easier to switch lanes but living in Vegas there aint a whole lotta stuff coming out of here except maybe some ice cream out of henderson cold storage or ocean sray and that a dry load that pays sheet... My lane is northern cali or yuma or nogales..maybe ill go back and haul double drops or RGN's for awhile...
