Split the farm up into separate entities recently and just bought a new truck, trying to get everything correctly documented.
Basically one company owns the trucks and other equipment and leases it all to the operating company. The company that owns the trucks never has or will operate the trucks. The trucks will always be leased to the operating company.
My question is, do I need a USDOT # for both the lessor and the lessee even if the lessor does not operate the truck? I am getting one for the lessee as we speak, but was curious if I needed to get one for the lessor or not since it will never operate in their name.
The trucks title does state that it is leased through the one company to the operating company.
I was also told to keep a copy of the lease agreement in the truck?
Are there any other steps I am missing? We are a private farm carrier so not for hire, no operating authorities, fuel tax etc etc.
Thanks.
Does Lessor Need DOT # if not operating?

Don't know what type set up you have but you may want to check with your home State as to IFTA. It will also depend if you are interstate. I know in my State, farm tractor trailers crossing state lines need ifta. Some State's give exemptions for a straight truck under a certain weight. -
I have the number for the operating business. I will put that on the truck, as well as a copy of the agreement in the truck.
Anything else I am missing? Or is it just that simple?
Thanks much.
