I was told to bring with me to orientation a battery pack for the cpap machine, i looked up some prices and they are expensive. anyone know where i can get one at a good price? I thought about using a duracell power pack 300 will that be sufficient for the DOT regs?

My CPAP works on a 12V cig lighter type plug in the truck. I have read on a cpap forum that you can use one of those rechargable jump start batteries that have the 12v plugs on them.

The battery back up they sell with the cpap cost a couple hundred bucks.
I would be concerned about a company wanting you to have that. Idling a truck with a cpap isn't just for the power needs. You can get hypothermia using one below 50F because of the volume of air being forced into your lungs..cheflee Thanks this. -
wsyrob>please explain this further.

The machine is pushing pressurized air into your lungs and constantly replacing it with new air. If that air is cold it does not have a chance to warm up that normal breathing would allow. I idle the truck and use my bunk heater controls to maintain a comfortable temp. At home our bedroom is colder and it takes a night to adjust.
I read the hypothermia warning when I was researching CPAPs several years ago when my doc wanted me to get tested.

cheflee Thanks this. -
the company told me i need it for dot regs if the truck batts die or for break down reasons
-
That's kind of screwey. If the truck batteries won't run a CPAP you sure aren't going to drive it anywhere. Break downs should be spent in a hotel. I bring my 120 volt cord for that.
Also there are no DOT Regs for CPAP use. There is a medical review board that has made recommendations that companies are jumping on but there are no rules...yet.cheflee Thanks this. -
I use a CPAP and I run it off a small inverter. I can run my CPAP for 6-8 hrs with the engine off without draining my batteries. That's also including the load from my refrigerator. My Columbia has a low voltage warning and cutoff and I've only had it go off once when I was using my CPAP and that was after not idling for more than 12 hrs and watching TV, having the CB on, my fan on, etc.
Starting the engine won't reset the CPAP when connected to the inverter when it's running so it would work with a truck equipped with Optimized Idle/Cummins ICON, etc.cheflee Thanks this. -
If you get the 12V adapter for your CPAP you could probably run it longer. Most are made to run on DC power. That big brick on your power cord is inverting the AC to DC. An inverter in a truck is converting the power twice which wastes energy. Mine will run all night no problem with a 12 volt cooler running as well.

i have one of those battery jump start things with a power inverter on the back would they be allowed on the truck for a back up to the cpap or something i am kinda confused here

My Wife's CPAP has a water chamber to humidify the air that it is blowing making it more pleasant/less irritating.
That chamber has a heater to keep the water at a comfortable temp. She also has a hose cover. A snuggy type deally to keep the air warm all the way to the mask.
