Depends on where you go, what your account is, what part of the country you run in.
I worked for Ryder for five years, at first it was the best job I ever had. So long as they kept me local, life was good. I could just about set my own hours, make my own schedule, it was awesom.
Then they put me over the road and life went to [you know where]. I think part of the trouble was the CSA thing. When I realized that the CSA program was actually coming after me the driver, I told the disp. there would be no more freebies. I told him from now on if I had a couple of marker lights out or if a tire was bald, no matter how minor the issue, I would take the truck/trailer to get it fixed and I would not be making the delv till all equipment would pass an inspection. At first he just smiled and said, "Of course, that is your job, blah blah blah..."
You should have heard the change in this joker the first time I was two hours late because my marker lights were out and I stopped by the Ryder shop to get them fixed. I called him and told him my first delv, 60 miles or so away would be a couple hours late because of the situation.
All the sudden this nut job starts yellin and hollaring as if someone has his man hood in a visegrip on his end of the phone. He takes to threatening me that I'd be fired and telling me "things were gonna change" and I would "not like the change" and he said I "knew what he was talkin about".
Another time I ended up being about a day behind on my deliveries because I had to stop and get all eight tires changed on the trailer they loaded for me. He went a little nuts on me there. Because of this incident I had to be out on the road Saturday when I was supposed to be home saturday. For this reason I asked him (on the phone) a simple question: "can I expect to recieve some layover pay since I'll be out Saturday and this is ultimately due to the fact that I had to stop and get your trailer fixed?"
"Why would you expect layover pay for this? It's part of your job."
I tried to summarise the account again. He interupted me and started yellin and kussing. Then he told me, "If you can't handle this job, this is what I want you to do - when you finish this run, clean out your truck and leave the keys to your truck in the guard shack."
I had several more fun inncidents similar to this before I said enough.
***ON THE OTHER HAND****
I know other guys who work at Ryder who are thrilled with there job. One of the guys I trained on the SEMCO account left SEMCO and now he hauls tankers around the New Orleans area, his dad is a mechanic for Ryder and he told me his son has been raking in about $1200-1500 a week.
And I know other guys who do pretty well with them. I'm happy for them. All I can say is look before you leap. -

I worked for Ryder Intergrated Logistics out of Grand Prairie, TX on the AC Delco battery account. We delivered car batteries to Wal-Mart, K-Mart, auto dealers etc. I had a route going from DFW to Tulsa every week. Left with a full load of batteries and came back with a full load of scraps. Had to write up the warranties of each battery returned. Had to shrink wrap pallets of scrap batteries and load them on the trailer with electric pallet jack and lift gate. Hot sweaty work but I stayed in shape. Equipment was nice and the boss was too. Overall I liked it there, never had any problems. I left when I decided to buy my first truck. Worst mistake I ever made. What was great is you could earn extra money on your days off driving for the Ryder load board which was just loads needing a driver for a one time run from one of the other accounts. Mostly car parts from the Arlington GM plant or tires from BF Goodrich. Easy runs and good pay. Just needed to be careful not to run out of hours for your regular job.

I am working there now. Every time I turn around I am hearing another rule. Not a whole lot in the way of training. The account is Toyota not Nissan. M-F for me became T-Sat.
The hours aren't too long. I get the impression Ryder is going to be using more temps and staffing company drivers. We get no 401K from the staffing company, no paid holidays, 3 weeks off unpaid a year during model change over, and Christmas. -
So do you work as a temp for Ryder or an actual Ryder employee?
-
Full time for a staffing company.
-
Which Ryder company did you drive for? I currently work for millis transfer and i don't lease. Id like to be home every weekend or every day but scared to lease from a company. Does ryder lease?
-
And how much do you touch the freight?
