Is one allowed to drive their truck around for shopping or venturing around when off for their reset?

I asked dispatch if I could go to a walmart for supplies during an unload that I had to unhook from the trailer for. They approved it.

Some carriers will charge you per mile and take it off your check...if you get one.

lmao Krooser, you're probably right. I would imagine though as long as it isn't "excessive" then it isn't an issue. On a rare occasion I have contacted the company to get "approval" before moving if it was a distance beyond what would normally be acceptable.

I do it all the time. I just ask the boss man and he always says yes, I don't even have to call him ;)

I just completed the first week of CDL training. I asked the instructor about whether a driver could use the truck to perform necessary travel for personal supplies and business and still log the time as 'off duty'. He said that in order to do this, the driver would need written permission from the company. This protects the driver against a possible HOS violation.

Our company has a "no personal use" policy. We have elogs so if you drive you log it. My previous company was paper logs and we did it all the time.
